These two guys are going so fast that you ca n't be the re and ride comfortab le, you have to put yo urs e lf o n the line. These guy s have st e pp ed it up a little bit on m e, an d it' s be e n frustrating to be back a little ways. N o w it's just fo c using on ge tting o ut o f that comfort zone. It' s one o f th os e ra ces w here you just go all o ut. They 're not land ing o n t he downsides, they' re overjumping them an d flat landing jum ps, and that's not a fun way to ride a bike , but it 's not fun getting third by My 26 a lo ng ways either, so the second mo ta I was pinning it off the jum ps, flat-l anding ev erything, and trying to m ake up as m uc h time as I could. " I just have to ke e p w orking," Wi nd ham added. " I picked up a lo t of tim e betwe e n the first mota and the second ." Fonseca started mota o ne off in thi rd , went back to fourth after W indh am passed him , and was unable to fe nd o ff a late-race c harge by To rtelli, finishing ou t the mota in fifth. But in the second m ota , Fonseca, wh o got into fou rth o n th e e ighth lap, m anage d 250cc Michael Byrne 7th (7-7) Michael Byrne looked fast allday and spent most of both motos near the lead pack, but for the factory Kawasaki rider, that wasn't enough. "I was a little off today - I needed to be about a second a lap faster," Byrne said. "The first moto I was there, but I rode a little tight and made mistakes. The second mota I got a bad start, spun on the concrete a little bit, but I rode a lot better, but I started like 20th. That makes it kind of hard. I reallywant to catch David [Yuillemin], because he's the guy ahead of me in the championship." Tortelli said. "Everyt hing went great all the way. I felt in great shape and was feeling good. The second moto, Emesto was riding good ; he had good speed . I got hung up a couple of times with lappers, so I was doing the yo-yo with Emie - I would gain on him, drop back, gain on him ... But every race I'm getting better and stronger." 28 Heath Voss 11th (II-II) Mach I Yamaha's Heath Voss was another ride r who posted matching rnoto finishes, though he would 've liked a little higher finishes. "Today wasn't the greatest for me ," Voss adm itted. "The first moto - the start is about two miles long and we're going 80 going into it I had a great jump and I was way o ut in front . I looked over my shou lder and I saw Carmi chael and I let off too soon, so I started like 15th and I finished II th oThe second moto, I had a great start, started out fifth and faded to 11th, so it wasn't such a great day." At one point in the second moto, Voss pulled over for a moment and lost two positions when he landed hard over a jump and jammed his wrist. 12th (12.12) -. ....- """' . The factory Suzuki rider . has been having a tough time lately. He's had a rash of crashes , one of which forced him to sit out the second moto last week at Unadilla, where he hit his head pretty hard. He was happy to get out of Troy in one piece. "t ruthfully, I've never ridden so nervous in my life," Hamblin said. "I got hurt here really bad in '02, and everybOdy knows how I've been on tHe ground the last couple of races . This is the first time I've scored points in six rnotos. To tell you the truth, I wish I could say that I had fun and rode good, but I've always struggled at this place, and I'm glad that I finished a full day of racing without hitting the ground. I rode so timid, tight and nervous today that I didn't even feel like being out there. My hat's off to Rickyfor keeping his streak alive." Sebastien Tortelli 5th (4-$) It seemed as though Sebastien Tortelli Was on the move all day. Tortelli started off the first mota al'ound 10th and the second moto around seventh. Both times he improved at least a few positions. Tortelli had a good fight with Emesto Fonseca in the second moto but lust couldn't get around the Honda rider. "The first moto was great; I raced hard all mote," 32 AUGUST 4,2004 • CYCLE NEWS 43 Ryan Clark 17th (20-15) Team Solitaire.com/Yamaha's Ryan Clark was held back by bad starts in both motos. "I'm having problems getting off the concrete here," Clark said. "I got a bad start in my qualifier, came back, had a dismal start in the first moto and the same thing in the second. I ended up getting points in both motos with a 20-15 . I rode fairly well - not to my potential, I believe - but I made it through uninjured. The starts have been my downfall throughout my whole career. As soon as I can figure how to get out of the gate , I might have something to show." 57 Joe Oehlhof 21st (17-25) The Subway/Handa rider wanted to do well in front of his home crowd, but things just didn't go his way. The second mota, I was ridi[lg really good, worked my way up to 12th and then started feeling it. "I felt good in practice, but it just didn't really come together. I don 't know what went wrong. Evetything felt good, I just didn't go forward . I got a bad start in the first moto and came from behind anil got 16th. I thought, 'Hey, get a better start in the next one and go forward,' but it just didn't happen. I kind of felt weak . It's kind of back to the drawing board. I tried my best , so l've got to lie happy with that.
