545 Hor§epower 'Bu§a The North American horsepower record for registered horsepower on a dyno was obliterated in Long Be ach, California, on Sunday, July 18, at the Jardine West Coast HP Dyno Shootout, held in conjunction with the Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show. JE Pistons' John Noonan and his Suzuki GSX 1300 R Hayabusa land speed bike registered 54S horsepower to set the mark. A huge crowd packed the Jardine booth as Noonan arrived straight from EI Mirage dry lake, where he had just set a land speed record earlier in the day. Noonan set a land speed record in the MBG-1650 class at EI Mirage just outside of Palmdale , California, at 209 mph . On his first dyno run his Hayabusa recorded a 416 horsepower pull, and he then followed it up with the record setting 54S .1 hp run and then backed it all up with a 537 hp run . "No one had ever seen anyth ing like this," said Jardine vice president Kerry Bryant. "The re isn't anything in this parking lot , except perhaps the e ngines on the Q uee n Mary behind us he re , that can even touch this." "I would like to thank the many people that made this happen," Noonan said. "JE Pistons and Carrillo Rods for supplying us with the best parts available, Velocity Racing Turbosystems, my girlfriend and crew chief Michelle, for all her support and assistance, and of course Jardine Performance Products for letting me use and abuse their dyno! "The surface did not have too much grip, so I wasn 't able to perform some of my usual tricks, but the crowd reacted well, and I wish everyone well for the first Chinese Grand Prix in September." PET RO NAS also used the festival to announce the launch of its range of premium grade automotive and motorcycle engine oils in China on July 14, 2004, officially entering the country's lubricants market. "This festival gave us an excellent communications tool for building awareness of our brand , and it opens up some good business opportunities for the PETRONAS group," PETRONAS ' vice president of oil business, Datuk Anuar Ahmad, said. "To be able to demonstrate Formu la One on the streets of Shanghai to the local population is an excellent way to prepare them for their first-ever Formula One Grand Prix in September."
