The me lee had Orlando in the lead. ove r Ryan Bur ke and Dan Turner, with Turpin te ar ing up the track to catch up to the leade r. At the end of t he t hird lap, Turpin made his mo ve around Orl ando t o c a pture t he le ad c ro ssi ng t he start/ finish line . Meanw hile, a rider had falle n in a precarious fash io n outs ide of t urn se ven , causing a red flag. The race was called. Turpin ke pt his wits abo ut him in the Race of the Rockies eve nt . The lights turned gree n, and he wa s gone! Stre tching o ut a IS -b ikelength lead over Turn er and sta rt ing to run away w ith t he event , Turpin was detennined to brea k his lap reco rd . Battling ove r thi rd we re O rlando and Burke , with Burke hou nding Orl ando, right o n his back wheel. As this w as a tight track. the race fell into a so rt of fre ight-tr ain-type eve nt unt il the closing laps , w he n t he leade rs were w o rking the backmar ke rs. That 's w hen the race heated up. Turn e r never took his eyes off the prize and was reeling in Turp in, w ho seemed to be getting balked , especially in the hou se turn. It was act ually Lapointe' s best friend w ho put in t he last $S2 needed to reach the $10,000 mark. Lapointe had no clue t hat a fund raiser w as be ing he ld in his nam e . During the lun ch break, Sarde lla gat he re d all the racers together and called Lapo inte at the ho spita l o n a ce ll pho ne . Sarde lla let Lapointe kno w how muc h had bee n raised in his honor, and to ld him to "w o rk hard to get back o n your bike and get we ll," and also re minded him that "mo toc ross is a family." T he bidde rs were able to pick a bag fro m the seve n available w ithout loo king inside. The highes t bidde r was Mrs. Glas Custo m Printing, w it h a $ 14 40 co nt r ib ut io n fo r t he O ne Industries bag. The Harr is family (A to Z Pools) had the se co nd-highe st bid w ith $ 1426 . and t hey chose the Kawasaki bag " be cause it 's heavy."
