My Own Race
155 Ben Bostrom

4th/2nd
Ben Bostrom thought that
lappers cost him a chance for
victory in Saturday's Superbike finale, and he wasn't
happy about it. In fact. he was
as mad as Ben Bostrom gets.
Sunday was much better, the
Californian riding to second
place (see story). "Why do I
have to risk my life cutting
through lappersr' Bostrom said. "That was actually going to be a good
race because Mat [Mladin] and I was going to duke it out to the end, and
Miguel [Duhamel], he would have caught up and he'd have been in there
and it would have been a race to the finish. Instead, there's no I'%#ing
way. It was me, Mat, and I'm leading and I took wrong way through the
lappers, and Mat goes around, and I go, 'That's nice.' But then he got a
Iapper that I didn't. I go to bring it back in, and at the same time 1'"", got
to let Miguel by. Then Miguel gets a lapper. I'm like, 'Oh, my god, we're
all spread out.' I'm like, 'Miguel should win this, but I bet he won't
because of the tappers.' I should finish third, but I didn't because I got
stuck. Aaron [Yates] goes by and he just keeps catching them right, and
now I'm I'%#ing fourth and I'm back here. And I'm like, 'What the
1'%# am I doing back here when we're running a faster lap time? We
should at least finish podium.' It's a I'%#ing joke of a series. It's not an
enjoyable race because of the lappers. We carne up on fIVe guys coming
into tum two, and I thought, 'Well, maybe I can swoop them on the
inside and cut them off on the little left before the Keyhole. ' But instead
those guys- the blue nag doesn't mean nothing to them. 1lley just stay
right on their line and push me to the curb. So Mat goes around me on
the outside and got a couple of lappers in the process. I tried to pass
[Dean] Mizda! - I had to run into him, because the guy's a roadblock.
That's what gapped us out, initially I lost the front in the Keyhole trying
.
to catch up a little bit. We should have made it back. I know Miguel and I
would have caught up instandy if there weren't tappers. In this case, it
was probablyhis [Duhamel's] race to win, but you can't.; it's a joke. I'm
not racing for the championship. I knew I'd be able to stick with him
[Duhamel). I knew we'd fmish second or third - that would be great."

Eric Bostrom

In Sawrday's race, Bostrom got a flyer of a start from the second row
and led the race - for five corners. From there, the Ducati Austin rider
started a steady slide backward until finallyending up seventh. On Sunday, it was more of the
same, though he didn't
even start fast in that one.
''I'm just not fast through
the corners, man," Eric
sald after Saturday's race.
"W e 're not holding a tight
line through the comers.
This place is where you
connect the dots, and we're not connecting them very well. The starts
are great, and I wish we could keep the momentum going . We even had
to race our other bike because we didn't want to take a chance of racing
the one we crashed this morning. It wasn't quite as good. to be honest,
as the bike I crashed. I hope to be back on that one tomorrow. 1'"", got a
lot to figure out."
