Lafferty: As Good as New V TM's Mike Lafferty returned to the AMNFMF National Enduro I ' series circuit, and it appears that his four-month layofffrom knee surgery hasn't slowed him down one bit. In Marquette, Michigan, on July 18, Lafferty scored the overall win in round six of the series , edging out former champ Randy Hawkins by two points, 25-27. Lafferty and the Yamaha-mounted Hawkins were tied for about the first half of the ride before the defending champ, Lafferty, was able to gain some ground and pull away from Hawkins and the rest of the field. Third place went to series leader and Lafferty's teammate David Lykke, who dropped 28 points . The top three riders finished well ahead of the fourth-place rider, Husqvarna's Fred Hoess, who finished out the day with 35 points dropped, just one point better than that of KTM rider Rich Lafferty. Suzuki-mounted Wally Palmer finished sixth, ahead of Matt Stavish (Ho nda), Billy Russell (KTM), Mark Hyde (KTM), John Barbe r (Gas Gas) and Steven Reed (Gas Gas). After receiving news that he had won his protest from the Geo rgia National Enduro last March, which he is now credited with winning, Steve Hatch ended up having a miserable day in Michigan. Alabama . announced on July 15 that Birmingham, Alabama, will not be the site of the United States Grand Prix in 2005 . Gene Hallman, president and CEO of Zoom, notified MotoGP rights holder Doma last week that the Barber Motorsports Park shou ld no longe r be considered for a 2005 date . "Dorna has been very patien t with us," Hallman said in a press release . "We guaranteed public sector funding prior to assuming the financial risk of hosting a MotoGP. "Wh ile we had some success in our public sector fundraising efforts, we fell short of our overall goals," said Hallman. "Public sector funding is projected to represent lessthan one-third of the over all race revenues. We were requesting the funds come fro m the economic development and touris m budgets ." Zoom is actively pursuing other events for the Barber Motorsports Park. The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Birmingham expects the 2004 economic impact of the Barber Motorsports Park to exceed $100 million, according to Barber Motors ports Park. Following the Georgia National Enduro , KTM's David Lykke was declared the winner, but tha t was put on hold when Hatch and several other riders filed an official scoring protest with the AMA regard ing a reported "short cut " in the course taken by a few riders , according to a release from Throttlehead .com. The promoters con firmed that a sect ion of tra il wasn't clearly marked . and several riders gained an unfair advantage by taking a substantially shorter route through one of the test sections.
