I just ask KellyTedder. Tedde r 's day started out very well , as the leading rider for Montclair Yamaha pulled all a big [ir s t - m otc win over Honda rider Sean O 'Connor of john Bur r Cycles in the 12Scc Expert class at the third round of the Yamaha Dealers Series . The two sho ps are in a terrific battle fo r the po ints lead, so when the two ride rs got ready for the first 250c( rno to, another showdown was expected. Befo re t hings cou ld ge t inte nse, though , Tedder got a rude awakening. '" just made a stupid mistake ," he admitted afte r his miserable ninth-p lace finish. '" bur ied t he (ran t wheel in a corner; it' s a litt le bit slippery, a flat corner.;" The IS-year-old shrugged it a ll and vowed to do better in the second rou nd of mo tos . At the start of t he second 12Scc Expert moto , Tedder again d rove hard, leading O 'Conn o r but tra iling Yamaha rider Ter ry Fow le r, a nother JBC com petito r who was co ntesting the Vet Expert in the same wave . "We we re having a good race," said Fowler later, "and I knew he [Tedder] was pretty close , and since we aren't in the same class, I was gonna le t him go by, because I knew he and Sean were racing for the overall ." He neve r got the chance , as Ted der's Yamaha suddenly washed out. " I knew I coul d have just sat behi nd him [Fowle r]," Tedder admitted, "but it's not fun if you don't win..." So he went for the pass. Big mistake . " I have a bald fron t ti re , and it st art e d sliding," Tedder said , "and I launched a ll the top of a steep dro p-off and just landed on the side of my body." Unconscious for a few moments, Tedde r eventually got up and w alke d to the ambulance, where he rec overed for nearly half an hour before emerging, appa rently unshaken. "t'm fine," Tedder said. "I knocked myself out (or a minute or two, but I'll be able to race next weekend." O 'C onnor (2-1 ) got the overall. Fowler aced the Vet Expe rt class. Sean O 'Connor (212) leads Kelly Tedder (93) and the rest of the 250cc Exper ts a t rou nd t h ree of the Yamaha Dealer Ser ies. O 'Connor topped th e 125 cc Exp ert class. Yama ha- mou nted C ur ra n pass ed Blyth e and the n Gibson on lap three (or t he lead . Cu rran had fought w ith Gibso n in the ir heat, and he was de ter mine d to repeat his heat -ra ce w in with a vict o ry in the ma in eve nt. By lap five , Gibson had again taken the point posit ion, with Bland and Troudt swapping back and fort h for third place . Gibson rod e hard for the final five laps for the w in by a bikelengt h over Curran . Trou dt and Bland 's batt le was sett led at the flag, with Bland getting the nod over Trou dt . After a se rio us get -off in pra ct ice , TTSOO Y amaha rider Steve Smith had a great race with Marty Stalmake r in the Open Vintage Amate ur main. RickWe rner led the first three laps, ahead of Smith and Stalmaker. On lap five, Smith made his mo ve comin g o ut of turn (o ur and go t by Sta lmaker and th en Rick to take the lead , w hich he held to the end . At the flag, the o rder was Smith, Stalmaker, Rick and josh Tomes. Ope n Amateur ride r Eric Nichol, riding his 46 Kerrigan labe ling-backed Yamaha YZF, led fro m st art to finish . Albuq uerq ue , New Mexico 's Marcel Hesch rod e his YZF to second. Th e Handicap thr ee-lap Dash For Cash was act ion- packed from the start to finish. Brando n and Arndt we nt bar to bar for tw o laps, with neither ride r having a clear advantage. Triumph rider Gibso n kept the heat on in third. O n the last lap, Arnd t dived into tum o ne (or a shot at the lead , o nly to lowside into Brando n. T ho ugh Brandon staye d on tw o w hee ls, his steel shoe came loo se , a nd he slo wed just e no ugh for Gibson to snea k unde r him on the back stretch to take the lead and the w in. JULY 21, 2004 • CYCL E N EWS Having wo n t he first 2S0cc Expe rt mo to , O ' Connor 's chances at a dou ble seemed strong when they sta rted, but a poor start left him str uggling in fourt h while Hon da rider Ross Garcia, moto one 's runner-up, sped into the lead, with Josh Cavanaugh tra iling in second. Garcia co nt inued to lea d until th e fina l lap , whe n Cavanaug h c ha rge d past him o n the Mount Shoe i downhill. However, even with the moto win, Cavanaug h could onty manage third overall after placing fo urth in the initial moto.
