Round 3 : Glen Helen Raceway Park
O'Connor, Garcia Top Glen Helen
By JOHN BETHEA
SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 13
t 's amazing how quickly a day (an go sour.
I
just ask KellyTedder.
Tedde r 's day started out very well , as the
leading rider for Montclair Yamaha pulled all a
big [ir s t - m otc win over Honda rider Sean
O 'Connor of john Bur r Cycles in the 12Scc
Expert class at the third round of the Yamaha
Dealers Series . The two sho ps are in a terrific
battle fo r the po ints lead, so when the two
ride rs got ready for the first 250c( rno to,
another showdown was expected.
Befo re t hings cou ld ge t inte nse, though ,
Tedder got a rude awakening.
'" just made a stupid mistake ," he admitted
afte r his miserable ninth-p lace finish. '" bur ied
t he (ran t wheel in a corner; it' s a litt le bit
slippery, a flat corner.;"
The IS-year-old shrugged it a ll and vowed
to do better in the second rou nd of mo tos .
At the start of t he second 12Scc Expert
moto , Tedder again d rove hard, leading
O 'Conn o r but tra iling Yamaha rider Ter ry
Fow le r, a nother JBC com petito r who was
co ntesting the Vet Expert in the same wave .
"We we re having a good race," said Fowler
later, "and I knew he [Tedder] was pretty close ,
and since we aren't in the same class, I was
gonna le t him go by, because I knew he and
Sean were racing for the overall ."
He neve r got the chance , as Ted der's
Yamaha suddenly washed out.
" I knew I coul d have just sat behi nd him
[Fowle r]," Tedder admitted, "but it's not fun if
you don't win..."
So he went for the pass. Big mistake .
" I have a bald fron t ti re , and it st art e d
sliding," Tedder said , "and I launched a ll the
top of a steep dro p-off and just landed on the
side of my body."
Unconscious for a few moments, Tedde r
eventually got up and w alke d to the
ambulance, where he rec overed for nearly half
an hour before emerging, appa rently unshaken.
"t'm fine," Tedder said. "I knocked myself
out (or a minute or two, but I'll be able to race
next weekend."
O 'C onnor (2-1 ) got the overall. Fowler
aced the Vet Expe rt class.
Sean O 'Connor (212) leads Kelly Tedder (93) and the rest of the 250cc
Exper ts a t rou nd t h ree of the Yamaha Dealer Ser ies. O 'Connor topped th e
125 cc Exp ert class.
Yama ha- mou nted C ur ra n pass ed Blyth e and
the n Gibson on lap three (or t he lead . Cu rran
had fought w ith Gibso n in the ir heat, and he
was de ter mine d to repeat his heat -ra ce w in
with a vict o ry in the ma in eve nt. By lap five ,
Gibson had again taken the point posit ion, with
Bland and Troudt swapping back and fort h for
third place . Gibson rod e hard for the final five
laps for the w in by a bikelengt h over Curran .
Trou dt and Bland 's batt le was sett led at the flag,
with Bland getting the nod over Trou dt .
After a se rio us get -off in pra ct ice , TTSOO
Y
amaha rider Steve Smith had a great race with
Marty Stalmake r in the Open Vintage Amate ur
main. RickWe rner led the first three laps, ahead
of Smith and Stalmaker. On lap five, Smith made
his mo ve comin g o ut of turn (o ur and go t by
Sta lmaker and th en Rick to take the lead , w hich
he held to the end . At the flag, the o rder was
Smith, Stalmaker, Rick and josh Tomes.
Ope n Amateur ride r Eric Nichol, riding his
46
Kerrigan labe ling-backed Yamaha YZF, led fro m
st art to finish . Albuq uerq ue , New Mexico 's
Marcel Hesch rod e his YZF to second.
Th e Handicap thr ee-lap Dash For Cash was
act ion- packed from the start to finish. Brando n
and Arndt we nt bar to bar for tw o laps, with
neither ride r having a clear advantage. Triumph
rider Gibso n kept the heat on in third. O n the
last lap, Arnd t dived into tum o ne (or a shot at
the lead , o nly to lowside into Brando n. T ho ugh
Brandon staye d on tw o w hee ls, his steel shoe
came loo se , a nd he slo wed just e no ugh for
Gibson to snea k unde r him on the back stretch
to take the lead and the w in.

Having wo n t he first 2S0cc Expe rt mo to ,
O ' Connor 's chances at a dou ble seemed
strong when they sta rted, but a poor start left
him str uggling in fourt h while Hon da rider Ross
Garcia, moto one 's runner-up, sped into the
lead, with Josh Cavanaugh tra iling in second.
Garcia co nt inued to lea d until th e fina l lap ,
whe n Cavanaug h c ha rge d past him o n the
Mount Shoe i downhill. However, even with the
moto win, Cavanaug h could onty manage third
overall after placing fo urth in the initial moto.
Garcia was still ahead of O 'Conn or at the nag,
and he too k the overall win.
