Hurd Motorspor t s S upercross AMA District 6 Points Race Hurricane Hills s po rts Center Supercross Returns to Hurricane Hills! By JIM P. SANDERSON CUFFORD, PA, JUNE 19 S upe rcro ss racing unde r the.lights returned to the beautiful Hurricane Hills Sports Center o n June 19 after a 12-year hiatus . Hurd Motorsports. promoter of the Hurricane Hills and Broome-Tioga Sports Cen te rs , spent many weeks updating the upper stadi um above the motocross trac k to host night supercross raeing. A new and expanded track layout was constructed. as well as a new announcers' tower, and state-o f-the-art, high- o utpu t lighting was installed. T he track layout is similar to ones used (or indoor arenacross racing. but wit h a very cool twist : A peristyle section was added. reminiscent o f the supercross races he ld at the ol d L.A. Coliseum, where the riders wou ld ascend into the stands, turn. and come racing back down into the stadium. At the Hurricane supercross stad ium, the riders don 't actuaJly go up into the spectator area but up the back hill, turn , and come racing bac k down into a big technical triple-triple-triple section. It is one cool track design that requ ires excellent rhythm and timing skills to navigate successfully . Da ve Szy mansky can obv ious ly r ide supercross, as he topped both the I25cc and 250cc Amateu r d ivisio ns. Szym ansky battled w ith Brian Mulcahy in both divisions . Mulcahy beat Szymansky in bo th the I25cc and 250cc Amateur heat ra ces but came up short in the ma in e ve n ts, fin ishing second , beh ind Szymansky. Ren Jo lly round ed out the 125cc Amateur podium , and Dan Le w andow s k i closed ou t the 250 cc Amateur po dium. Mulcahy led th e start of the I25cc Amateur main , fo llow ed by Szyman sky, Micha el Kra tz, Marshall Hurd and jolly. Th e top four remai ned unchan ged until lap th ree , wh en Lewandows ki passed jolly to claim fifth. Mulcahy maintained th e lead unt il lap five, when he made a mista ke th at allowed 5zy mansky t o ge t by. Mulc ah y managed to lose only one position. Behind the t op two , Kratz rode a lone in t hird . Lewandowsk i passed Hurd to take fourth , and he managed to get past Kratz for third before the chec kers . Mulcahy had his starts down, as he led the start of the 250cc Amateur main, followed by Just in Hicks , Szymansky and Dan Zabrowski. Szymansky had th e point by lap two, and Hicks held se cond. Mulca hy d ro p ped to third. Jolly moved up to claim fourth, and Zabrowski was fifth. A lot can happen in a lap in supercross; on la p th ree , t he t o p five were 5zy ma nsky, Mulcahy, Jolly, Hicks an d Nick Johns o n. Szymansky had a four-second advantage by the sta rt of the fourth of th e seve n laps. Szymans ky and Mulcahy were all alone out fro nt by lap five . Jo lly was alone in third. johnson used a te xtbook block-pass on Hicks at t he entrance to the r hyt hm se cti on to take fourth . Szymansky got the w in, ahea d of Mulcahy, Jo lly, Johnson and R.J. Manchester was still on th e bike w hen it crossed the finish line, and he was cred ite d w ith second ~ and he got a " 10" for sty le, as he ma naged to get the bike stopped and d id a handless ge t-off, landed on his feet, tu rned , an d waved to the crowd. When the ga te came up, Pe rki ns was good fo r two laps before th ey ran him down. Bo yle to ok ove r, and he wasn't as easy to pass - a nd that's qui t e a trick wh e n y ou have at least fo u r r id e r s comi ng at yo u from eve ry direc tion.
