STORY AND P HOTOS BY BRENDAN LUTES ammoth has always been a trad ition for most motocross racers . It is the longest-running MX race in the country and holds a special place in everyone's heart . Throughout the two weeks of June families flock from all over the country to compete. And in past years factory supe rstars have even come out to race on the track that many people cons ider their favor ite . This year thousands of people came to Mammoth Mountain for what could qu ite possibly be the last Mammoth Motocross ever. And this year Jeremy McGrath showed up again to try once more to win all three Pro classes over the weekend : 125, 250 and Open. M McGrath wins as Mammoth MX comes to an end He didn't quite reach his goal, but he did succeed in winning two out of the three. He fell short in the 125cc Pro class that was won by young up -and -comer Thomas Hahn. With the three Pro classes being held from Friday to Sunday, Friday was the day for Open bikes. On this day all of the Open classes were run with the main 46 JULY 14,2004 • C YC LE N EWS event being the Open Pro class. The Open Pros raced in a different format than any other class - it was run, in a more traditional two-moto format , rather than qualifiers and one main event. The first moto saw Honda rider Timmy Weigand jump out to the early lead, followed closely by McGrath. "I got the holeshot and got to race 40th Anniversary with the guy [McGrath]," Weigand said. "It's just such an honor to race with him. He's such an awesome competitor and rider." The two riders circulated the course, battling it out until McGrath finally was able to make his move for the lead - after which he began pulling away.
