Carmichael cro ssed th e finish line 20 seconds ah ead of W indham, w ith Reed in
third an d Vuillemin in a distant fo urth .
T he e xpressions on Reed and
Windham's faces on the podium told the
whole story: They needed to find a way
to beat Carmichael, but th ey just didn 't
know w hat it wa s. Th is season is beginning to be co me re miniscent of t he champio n's pe rfe ct season, and no o ne can figure out how to st o p the C arm ichae l
fre ight train.
"We need to pick it up," Reed said.
"We 're trying and working hard at home.
That's all we can do is try as hard as we can ."
With Carmichael's style of getting the
holeshot and sp rinting until he can re lax, it
makes it difficult for his competition to
hang with him .
" Ricky sprints those first co uple laps ,"
W indham sa id. " He just opens up a lead .
So we need to work on that and get out
of the gate quicker."
Even w ith Carmichael winning both
motos at Red Bud, there still was no doubt
on anyone's mind that there were three
men on the track who were worthy of

praise : Carmichae l, Windham and Reed.
Trying to match Carmichael's speed is go ing
to be no easy tas k for Reed and Wi ndh am ,
and to make it even toug he r, Carmichael
isn't go ing to be le tting up anytime soo n.
" I'm go ing to try to ru n it [t raining] into
th e gro und," Carmichael said . " Be ca use
that's what works fo r me , and I know
what works for me. I'm all right on a
motorcycle, but o ther than that I don't
have too many other special powers." CN

OWN RACE:
Joaquim Rodrigues
250cc
10th (8- 1I)
The Portuguese rider is beginning to tum some heads
with his finishes so far th is year. Red Bud marked on ly
his third race back since break ing his wrist . "I think the
race went pretty good," Rodrigues said. "I think my lap
times were pretty good all weekend. The first rnoto I
was confident: I've been tra ininga lot. I got a pretty
good start. but the second tum I almost crashed
because someone ran into the back of me . In the end I
had some problems with the clutch, so I lost a few pos itions. In the second moto I think I got I Ith, but I was
pretty mad at myself because I crashed four times in one moto. I was so mad and trying to
come back that I was jumping laRocco's Leap with like 10guys on it. I'm really happy with
my result . I feel like I'm getting better every week, and I feel strong. So we 'll see ."

Se bastian Tortelli
9th (4 -15)
In his first race back since injuring his knee last year,
Tortelli surprised a few people in the first moto. "It was
good ; everything went good ," Tortelli said. "The first
moto was great. I was running third, tipped over and
gave it away to Kevin [Windham]. It felt great for a
comeback. In the second moto , I tipped over on the
second lap with Ernesto [Fonseca]. So I started to
charge and catch back up. Then I tipped over again. So I
mean if you want to do well, you can't crash ."

NickWey
7th (7 -8)
Wey had a decent day at Red Bud. He ran with the leaders for a little while before falling
behind a little in the first moto. "I've been practicing a bunch and feel like I'm improving
every week," Wey said. "The first moto I felt really strong. But I kind of got mixed up with
a lapper in some one-line sections on the last lap, and Ferry ended up closing in and getting
me with a couple of corners to go. I think that ended up really costing me because I think
I'm tied in points with a few guys. Suzuki is putting a good bike under me, and we made a
few changes to it, and it's handling really well. I'm just looking forward to the rest of the
season ."

Casey Johnson
20th (16-33)
Kawasaki rider Casey Johnson didn't have one of his best weekends. "In the first 2S0 rnoto, I was about top lOin the first turn ,
then I got in a pile-up," Johnson said. "I was able to work up to
16th by the end . Then the second moto, I think I was running
about 12th right behind [Timmy) Ferry and Byrner [Michael
Byrne), and I just wadded it in the back section and decided to call
it a day. I felt like I had good speed all weekend, but I don't know, I
think I just need to get better starts. I've been off for so long, this
is like one of my first races back. My fitness is good, and everything
feels good. Maybe Unadilla will be a little better for me ."
