A
t the Ama teur National Championships,
r'\jo hn Lewis started o ff w ith two dominating
w ins in the largest classes - 250cc Modified and
45 0cc Mod ified - in the Act ion Motorsports o f
York-spo nsore d sho rt track at Path Valley
Speedway Park. Lewis missed a third win in th e
505cc Mod ified class when his ROlaX broke two
laps fro m the end while run ning easi ly in fro nt,
giving Jonathan Reid the win .
In the 450cc Modified contest. Lewis put his
ABBA Systems/Axo/Schae ffer's H- D/5hoei spo nsored Honda in fr o nt o f Cory Texte r,
Richa rd Heverly an d Wes C o w a rd in. W h ile
Lewis pulled out to a half-lap margin by the end,
Heverly stayed close to Texter, taking second as
Ihey started the seventh lap.
Sporting a '" N " plate from his National title
last year, Lew is again jumped into the lead in
the 250cc Mod ified co ntest . th is time o ve r
Brando n Robi nson, Michae l Radley, Shane
Na r bo n ne and Aust in Green la n d . When
Robinson fell on the third lap, Lew is pu lled out
to a st ra ight -long margin, while the others
stayed close in the battl e fo r second .
The B5cc class feat ured a pair of good races .
The DTX fina l had Patrick Jaco b se n le ad ing
Hayden Avery, Michael j o h ns o n and Travis
Wyma n. T he orde r stayed co nsta nt as the y
qUicklycirded the high-ban ked quarte r-mile oval.
Jacobse n did pull out a little bneathing space. MoS!
of that cast of characters returned on the same
machines for the BScc Modified (7- 11) feature,
with Jacobsen taking the offICial start fro m Avery,
alte r Cho lett e Jr. took both moto wins in
the 25 0cc Four-Stroke (12- 15) Ju nio r
class in the weekly Saturday Night Series at the
Toledo, Ohio, motocross t rac k. Cholette also
took the overall the night be fore at Milan Cycle
City , the weekly Friday night track that makes
up the other half of the Scott USA Motocross
Championship Series.
The competition was severe in the 250cc
Four-S t roke j unior class , but Cholette powered
his Hon da to the overall on the obstacle- lade n,
su percross-style course. Cholette started the
race in style , using an outside-inside-outside line
on the tricky zigzag start. Ste ve Brighton gave
Cholette the most trouble, swapping the lea d
with him severa l times th roughout the races ,
but Brighton was unable to make a pass st ick
before t he checkered flag. The supe re xciting
night-racing track co nstantly keeps racers on
the ir toes while setting up for the next section.
Cholette was a ge nius in line selection . making
sure to keep the doo r shut o n Brighto n, who,
despite his incredible e ffo rt , had to settle fo r
second o verall , placing second in the first moto
and the n fourt h in the second moto after a stall.
In the o ther Jun ior class , the 80-125cc TwoStroke ( 12- 15) class , se cond -generation Delta
Raceway racer Bro c Pete rso n took the overall
o n his 105cc KTM. Like his fathe r, Kevin, did
years ago , Pe te rso n executed each jump with
professional sty le while keepi ng enough
distance to ensure his victory. Seth Bidlack and
N icholas McCarthy swapped second- and third place finishes on the ir 125s: the race be tween
Bidl ac k a nd McCart hy kept them busy with
each o ther whi le Peterson rode to the win .
Peterson was also victorio us in th e 85 cc

( 12- 15) Advanced class after a fierce, w heel-towheel , bar-to-bar, all-out war with local racer
Log an Gillen . Both Gillen and Pe t e rs o n are
g raduate s from th e 50cc track and have
worked their w ay to the top. Gillen won the
first mota, though the lead changed at almost
every tum and jump. The crowd in the sta nds
was on its feet by the en d of the second, tiebreaking moto, with both racers falling just two
secti o ns before the finish line . In a high-banked
r ight t u rn , they bumped slightly and mere ly
tipped over. McCarthy was right there , but he
was a sp lit-second short of taki ng first place
from the incred ibly fast pair.
In the 6Scc (1 0- 1 I ) cla ss , Do r ia n Yates
creamed all ot hers on his Kawasaki 65 . Yates
has be e n racing on a roached-out fou r-st ro ke
