Faria Fares Best at Milne Cup

COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 5
" F ,yin' Mike" Faria returned to Reno ,
Nevada. from Costa Mesa , California.
with the jack Milne Cup in his possession. The
night celebrated the 1937 World Speedway
Champion, jack Milne, who was also an American Speedway star.
It was an all-Scratch program : Three
rounds , with the top l O in points transferring
to two semis. Points were awarded four, three,
two , one, zero.
In round one, National Champion Scott Brant
went wire to w ire in the first fo ur-lap heat.
Bobby Schwartz won the second heat. The third
heat went to anot her veteran, Alan "Cra zy"
Christian , and the final heat belonged to Faria.
In the second round, Chris Manchester
topped Brant in the first heat. Schwam put in
another winning ride in heat two. Charlie
Venegas too k the third heat. Faria was still on
track with another victory to close out the
second round . Schwartz and Faria were sitting
on perfect scores, w ith Brant, Christian and
Manchester each just one po int back .
In round three , it was crunch time to make
the semis. Venegas opened up w ith a win.
Schwartz pulled off the hat trick with another
perfect ride in heat two, and his perfect score
was intact . Manchester put another win in his
col umn , a nd it loo ked like he was gett ing
warmed up for the main. The final race of the
qualifying rounds was all Faria's; like Schwartz,
he was still perfect for the night.
The first sem i saw the pole go to Schwartz.
Ed Castro was in two, with Andy Northrop in
three and Buck Blair and Manchester on the
outside . Manchester jumped out to a
comfortable lead . Schwartz was sec ond, and
these two would advance to the main , while
Northrop and Castro headed to the lastchance qualifier.
