Thor United States Mega Series Round: 7: Daniel 800ne MX King Steps Up to the Throne By CINDY GIBSON vt: LONDON, KY, MAY 16 Sports re tu rned to D aniel Boon e MX (o r r ound seven of the T hor United States Mega Seri es o n a soggy Sunday mo rning. Many visito rs we re surp rised to learn th at Sund ay's race w ould begin on time. despite the near- torren tial rainfall. Though many fait-w eather riders chose no t to participate . close to 300 dedicated series partici pan ts rema ined to brave the storm and gain points for the se ries . Weather co nditio ns fo rced the day's races to be sco red with a single -mo to fo rm at : One moto per class determined the final standing results. Among the mo st spectacular performances of th e day w ere t ho se of th e Pe e We e ri de rs' parents. Spectato rs were not only entertained by the slippin' and slidin' of the young guppies on the track but by that of the moms and dads running to the rescu e of the youngsters, who appeared to be disappearing into mountains of mud. W ith two 50cc classes dog -paddling ou t of a staggered start, Paul Cas ta no pulled the lead in th e first turn in t he 50 cc (4- 6) cla ss , w hile Paden King high-dived into the ho leshot of the 50 cc (7-8) po r t ion. Both Cas t a no and King ste pped up to the throne in first place . T he 250cc Pro -class divers seemed to have little tr ouble sw immi ng ou t o f th e sta rting gate . Ben Riddle , Ryan Sipes and Ryan 5tanesu swam ahead of th e res t of the school all th e w ay to the finish line . 5ixty-five -year-o ld local legend Jerry White of Londo n , Kentucky, held the c r owd's atte n tion in t he Ove r 45 class . As a Se n io r Beginner, White finally fulfilled his w ish to race for the first time at the age of 60 . Des pite two injuries earty in his career, Whi te returned this year better than ever to give the younger guys a r un fo r th e ir money: He ca s he d in o n t hird KTM teammates Jobie McCay, Justin Walford and Kyle Gibson exit the track afte r the mudfest that was the 6Scc (7 -9) clas s during round seven of the Thor United States Mega Series at Daniel Boone MX in Landon, Kentucky. www.cycleneW5.com CYCLE NEWS • JUNE 23, 2004 53
