Sports Ride rs Association of Colorado Supercross Race 3: Budweiser Event Center Sandell Steps Out By SUSIE NAEGEL LOVELAND, CO MAY 15 , o ound three o f the Sports Riders Association I'or Colorado supercross schedule was held, for the first time, at the new Budweiser Event Center in Loveland, Colorado. Changing it up a bit . the promoter, Racer 's Cho ice , des igned a narrow, fast , relatively' nat trac k (as far as supercross tracks go ) that provided a sharp contrast to the previous race (round two) held in Grand Junction , wh ich had some nasty jumps . With qual ifying races in all three Pro classes, the main events showcased the talented riders who live In Colorado. There was no doubt Open Pro-cla ss winner Kip Sandell (961), ru nne r- up Eric Rhoten (2 0 ) and third-place finisher Ted Campbell (77) give a pastrace inte rview at the third SRAC supercross event of the season, in Loveland, Colorado. 48 JUNE 23, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS Honda rider Ted Campbell returned with the expectation of sweeping the Pro classes; however, Vickery Motorsports Yamaha racer Kip Sandell. an e xperienced nat ional rider himself, along with Eric Rhoten of Montrose, 40th Anniversary Colorado, proved Campbell was beatable in the Open Pro class . Rhoten gunned his Honda off the gate to grab the holeshot and a momentary lead befor e Sandell got around him on the first lap to take over the lead and never loo k back. Meanwhile , after a slow start , Campbell methodically worked his way up from midpack to third place and attempted to pass Rhoten , but Rhoten utilized the tight track to his advantage and held off Campbell and simultaneously applied heavy pressure to Sandell . Nevertheless, Sandell remained cool and was the decisive Open Pro winner, followed by Rhoten in second, Campbell in third . Yamaha- mounted Mitchell Carroll in fourth, and Suzuki joc key Brian Edwards in fifth. In the 125cc Pro main event, Carroll was out front around the first corner. He was followed closely by Campbell, who immed iately began pressuring the Yamaha rider, and Carroll
