OFF-ROAD deep holes in the still-full creek. Just as he had done the day before, Lampkin jumped into the lead and held the position until section 13, where an uncharacteristic mistake put the defending champ on the ropes. This section was one that was modified during the early morning hours, and though Lampkin walked it, he did not notice the change. Lampkin missed a marker during his ride and, although he cleaned the section, carded a fove fo r the effort. Interestingly enough, Fujinamihad not seen the new marker either, but because he was lucky enough to witness Lampkin's ride , he was spared the same fate . "I haven't made a mistake that bad since I was a B-c1ass schoolboy," Lampkin said. "The problem was, we were rushed for time, and I never really looked at the sec tion pro perly, wh ich is totally inexcusable at this level, and as a resu lt I have paid a very heavy price ." At the halfway point, Fujinami led w ith 12 points , followed by Raga w ith 14 and Lampkin w ith 15. [arvis was having a frustrating day and was all the way dow n in sixth with 27. By the final lap, the sec tions had d ried co nsiderably, making them somewhat easy for the top guys. This was bad news for Lampkin, as he needed to make up three points from Fujinami in order to pull out the win. Fujinami d ro pped three final-lap points , compared to Lampkin's two, to take the victory. Raga followed in third with Cabestany and up-and-coming Beta rider Antonio Bou rounding out the top five. "Let's start with the positives," Lampkin said. "I am more than happy with the way I rode today and can once again count myself 40 Round 4 Jun e 5 -6, 2004 FIM Trial World Championship Series unlucky to not have won . Losing ten points to Fuji this weekend is not good, but the championship is far from over. I need to start winning again and put the pressure on him. I know he has won the last four trials, but it's not as ifI have been far away from doing the same. Fuji has definitely got the run of the luck at the moment, but that is what happens when you are riding well. I need to start creating my own good luck again." "I was lucky today," Fujinami said. "There is big pressure to win, and I am very, very happy today." On the podium, Fujinam i closed his eyes tightly and turned his face to the sky wh ile his country's national anthem played. It looked as though a small part of five years ' worth of pressure must have been lifted from him with the weekend's stellar performance. eN 5PI~IT MOUNTAIN SKI RESORT DU LUTH, MINNESOTA R ESULTS: J UN E 5- 6 , 2004 ( R OUN D 4 OF 10) Day I C HAMP CL: I.
