Race th ro ugh it with a set o f IO-inch tires o n a PW50 , and your job just gets eve n to ugher. That's exactly what lay in store for 7-year-o ld Tre nt Whis enant and his minibike as he mas tered the Gulf Coast Sandbl asters ' Loggy Bottom Enduro in Gul fport, Mississippi. The Beginne r Pee We e po ints lead er made his wa y do wn th e Loggy Bottoms on an .S-mile po w der y tr ai l, w ith fellow PWS O ride r Camer on Reed o n his tail. The 4-year-old Reed w a s incapab le of m atching W h isen ant' s ou tstanding lap times, but he kept a good lead on third-place finisher Rudy Ferguson. Being involved in the SERA Kids events for three years now, yo ung Whisenant made good use of his enduro riding ex pe rie nces and left the event with a three-fo r-thre e w in in the series. Rounding out the class was Katelynn Bradsh aw, who finished w ith a con sistent ride and a pretty smile crossing the finish line. An upcoming ride r and a new face in SERA, Cody Leachman was a sight to see in th e Pee Wee class. He and Steve Nicholas battled it o ut fo r seco nd w hile the in do m it a b le Mica h Williams cla ime d another victo ry. The KTMmounted Nicholas overcame Leachman's agility in t he sandy re sid ue , w hile Brenn en Reed picked up the pace o n his new KTM Senior. "I almost caught up to Cody," said Brennen, "a nd then I cras he d . Then I saw him on th e gro und w ith his bike sideways in the trail on the second lap, and I co uld n't get aroun d him. He got up fast!" Th e Kids Inte rmediate and Vet Kids classes were se nt out on to a cha llenging, tight , 13-mile t ra il full of roots, stumps an d logs . jo r dyn DuBose w hizzed th rough his tw o laps w ith only one thin g in mi nd : th e 2004 Enduro Kids Intermediate Trophy Hel met. "My back w hee l slid out, causing me to crash on a bridge , and I fell off the side," DuBose said. "T he re w e re a lo t of st um ps out there , too. Other than that , I had a pretty good day." Vet Kids ride r Spencer Cook decided to stay a little cautious and rid e conse rvati vely after crashing into a stump. " I hit my head really hard , and I sta rted getting dizzy," Cook re co unted , "so I dec ided to just ride smart and have fun." Smart riding paid off for th is Tenn essee boy, as he moved his wa y up in the points race to second place, behind Tyler Carter, w ho placed second at this event. The RevLoc clutch-equipped CRSOO Hondas built by Gayle Je nkins had a big nig ht. jake Tackitt, riding in the 600 cc class, flew his Honda ove r the to p of the hill in a blistering 3.i80 seconds to take the class w in and set the fast time of the night in Amateur act io n. His Team Je nkins running mate , also runn ing a Revloc CR500, topped the hill in 3.250 seco nd s for second place . In th e King Of T he Hill o ne -run shootout, t he two RevLoc Hond as again took the top tw o spo ts, but this time Bowm an took the w in, with an incredible 3.094-seco nd run - th e fast est overall time ofthe night. Tackitt ran second. But that w asn' t all for the Je nkins bik e s. Team captain Jenkins , t he "old Pro ," rode the bike Tackitt runs and won bo th the Senio r and Super Seni or classes w ith times of 3.4 19 and 3.560 , respectively Jason Northrup was a d o uble- class w inner, ta king the 750cc and Open -class w ins . He delivered w hat most o bse rvers agre ed we re the fastest two rides of the night on his 750cc Kawasaki triple in the first round, but the cloc k failed to start on bot h the first ride and the first rerun . When he rode the t hird ti me , he w heelied ou t of the ho le and had a relat ively slow run of 3.475 seconds . Riding his Jeff Th omas -built I220cc Yamaha in the Open class, Northrup ran a 3.332-second time for the win. jared McKay and Shane G reen w e re also double -class w inn ers. Gre e n, a 12-ye ar - ol d fro m Georgetown , Illinois , too k the Nati onal Cha mpionship in th e 85 cc Junior Mini class in 2003 , and he is riding Se nio r Mini class this year. He co ntinue d his win ning w ays w it h a 4.18 6second ride on his YZS5 to win the 85c c Senior Mini class. He then returned w ith a yz 125 and pos te d an ou t stand ing 3.737-se cond time to wi n that class - but o nly one-tho usandth of a second fas t e r than Kev in Dean Bond, w ho topped the hill in 3.738 seconds on his CR125. It does n't get much tight er than that! McKay got his first w in in the 250 cc class, w it h a 3.404-second run a boa rd his class y YZ2S0. Dure lfe took the lead coming out of turn two o n the first lap. The o nly ride r in the fie ld to give se rio us c hase was Yama ha pilot Ja ke Mataya , but he was o nly able to show him a wheel and cou ld not advance d uring the race. The field became sp read o ut , wit h some riders be ing lapped by the leaders. Follow ing Mataya was Kevin Anderson of Cambridg~, Minnesota. Durelle and fonner Nati ona l num ber ho lder Billy Ho ffmeister teamed u p to put on a dirtt rack clinic t hat st art ed in th e morni ng. The clinic involved some serious bike-se tup trai ning by Durelle . Each student had a chance to have his bike ad justed for optimal han d ling and suspension pe rformance . Th e nine stude nts received a lo t of track time and critique from th e two instructors. Ho ffme ister advised that they co uld take their clinic on the road if there was enough inte rest at other tracks and tha t th e y wo uld be ho lding another clinic at t he Moto Dome in the spr ing of 2OOS. It was a very good night of raci ng for young speedster Jory Morris. The Kawa saki jockey battl e d it out with Co nner Ande rson in bo t h the 85 cc Mini and 80cc O pe n classes . The two put o n a great perform ance of indoo r sho rt tracking. Mor ris , wh o rod e the same machine last year, see ms to have improved his skills over th e winter and is riding the bike much bett e r this spring. Riding his vintage Yamaha to two victories on the night was Michael "Dan" Haggard . After spe nding the day with road race r Adam Dolney at th e clinic, Haggar d we nt ou t and used his ne wfo und s kills t o win t he prized Open Amateur class and the Stoc k Fra me class.
