The coo test was won by the Hartley family from Atlanta. The weather is always a key to pic at H igh Point, since the race is often mired in rain and mud. Rain did come down d uring Friday's ama teu r racing, but sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday moming led to perfect track conditions for the 28th annual edition of the High Point National . A light sprinkle came down on Sunday afternoon, but it didn't have an effect on the trac k conditions. Way back when in 1994 Honda's Kevin , Windham raced his second-eve r National here at High Point and almost won the first moto. "Y eah, I'll never forget it, " said Wind ham, who was only 16 at the time. "l ied all the way to the last lap, and Doug Henry passed me . I'd pulled the holeshot and actually put so me dista nce between myself and the rest of me field. It was a very exd ting race and definitely an eye opener that go t me started in the National s." Freestyle spedalist Trevor "From Wherever" Vines showed up at Mou nt Morris to race Racer Production's new "Moto-X-CounlJ)''' event on Saturday. "Man, it was a blast," Vines said. "The race was 4S minutes long, and it combined woods riding tha t wasn 't all that technical with some wide-open GP racing. It was such a good time and a great ideaof combining the GNCC racers [suchas Barry Hawk and Randy Hawkins) with the motoerossers. Everybody that was there had a great time ." oss Maybe soon-to-be Texas buddies Hea th V and David Vuillemin have struckup a unique friendship that has Vuillerninseriously considering ditching his California digs in favor of Texas. "We've been friends for a while, and he 's [Vuillernin) liking Texas," Voss said. "We fIgUred we might ride and train together." Voss said he has four supercross tracks at his home outs ide San Antonio. The NPG enjoyed quite a largecrowd on Sunday, as nearly20,000 fans disregarded the local "60-percent chance of thunderstorms" weather reports to line the grassy knolls that provide some of the best all-track sight lines on the Nationals tour. The track maintenance crew, led by TIm Coombs and Mr. Holbert, certainly had the track in excellent shape, con sidering all of the rain they've had in the Midwest. Honda's Mike Gosselaar had the best ana1ogy of the week when he said, "Ricky [Carmichael) used to have to ' Rintstone' his two-stroke through the comers," Gosselaar said. Gosselaar then provided the graphic of what he mean, pedal ing his foot pike Fred Flintstone did in the rock-wheeledlno bottom car) to get around the comer: He doesn't seem to use that technique anymore on the four-stroke. "Not too bad , definitely getting better," said
