AHRMA's Dick Mann made the t rek from Nevada for the t rials portion of th e two-day eve nt (which also featured a motoc ro ss th e following day) and po sted 7-4 -0 scores for a win in the Premier Heavywei ght Intermediate class and trailed the lo ne Expe rt, Fenner, in th e Hea vyweight results. Gravity Park Motocro ss Night Se rie s Round 2: Gravity Park Holmes: A StUdy in Supremacy By PETE EMME CHILTON, WI, MAY I record turnout came out to Gravity Park in Chilton , Wiscon sin, for the seco nd round of th e Gravity Park Motocross Night Series, as 22S entries were on hand for so me great racing. The track was prepped perfectly, and the riders like d th e new fast and techn ical layout. KTM rider Brandon Holmes, only 5 years old, domlnated the Pee Wee Junior (4-6) division. Holmes grab be d t he first-mota holeshot, ahea d of Dylan Bunkoske, wh o had his hands full w ith Gravity ne wcomer Weston Williams. Tho ugh Williams got arou nd Bunkoske by the halfway point, it was too late , as Holmes, riding flawlessly, had already checked out. It wo n't be long before Holmes will be jumping some of the smaller do ubles on the track . Th e second mota saw Holmes o nce again captu ring t he holeshot, but t his t ime he had Bunko ske righ t on his rear fe nde r. After th e uphillwhoo p sect ion , Bunkoske came down the hill first, but Holmes dived to the inside to take over the point. C hris Manc; e ster h A Boogaloo Boogies to Season Opener Win o b by " Boogalo o" Schwartz is like a fine wine : He just gets bette r with age. At the Speed way season opener in Costa Mesa, California, he showed the young ones he 's going to be a major player this season, as he won the richest race of the night, the Scratch main. Shaun Harmatiuk got his seaso n off to a good start by winning the Handicap side of the program . The first Scratc h se mi saw th e pole go to Schwartz, with Shawn "Mad Dog" McConne ll in two , C hris "The Kid" Manchester in three, and Alan "Crazy" Christian on the outsid e. The first try at a start saw the red nag come out when t he re f tho ught Mancheste r anticipate d t he ga te . T he se c o nd t ry saw Sc hwartz a nd Christian get up close and personal in turn one. The third t ime wa s th e ch ar m , a nd it w as Manch ester on top , with Schwartz se cond . Th e y r an t he q uic k four- Iap p e r w itho ut ch ang ing po stnons . and both he ade d to th e main, while McConnell and Christian got ready for the last-chance qualifier. The second sem i had "Fast" Ed Cas tro on the pole, with Scotty "The Dominator" Brant in two , No rth ern Cal rider Chris Ker r in thr ee , and Ch arlie "Th e Edge" Venegas in four. The gate went to Venegas, but he and Brant waged a dogfight, swapping the lead for the first two laps. When the wh ite flag came out , Brant was o n top, and he a nd Ven ega s headed to the main, while Cast ro and Kerr we re headed for the LCQ. They loaded in for the LCQ with Castro on the pole and McConnell in two , with Kerr and Christian on the outside. McConnell went o ut on top and never looked back; he would be the final ride r in the main. Venegas drew the pole for the main, with McConnell in two , Manchester in t hree, and Brant and Schwartz on the outside . The gate came up and Schwartz dropped the hamme r and was out hard and on top . Brant was right behind, looking for a hole. Schwartz has a way of using the whole track, and he's mighty hard to pass, as Brant found out . He could not find a chink in Schwartz 's armor and had to sett le for seco nd. They got three more laps in before Ke rr we nt down and th e red flag cam e o ut. The race was called , with Har mat iuk taking the win. ~ ~ ~ c, ~ 5 ~ with Williams , who took over th e run ne r-up spot. Holmes took a co mmanding win, in front of e ight o th er Pee Wee ride rs, as he w e nt a perfe ct I-Ion the night . Co lin Hass stepped up into th e Pe e We e Sen ior class for 7- to 8-year-alds th is sea son and took t he first-mot a win ah ead of a very talented class. Cody Williams had his Polini in secon d but had to work. his way up to the front in the firs t mota after ge tti ng ar o un d Co dy Severinsen and Zack Masch. Severinse n too k the seco nd-mota holeshot, but Hass took over the lead in the whoops. Williams was mired midpack afte r a poor start but had moved into fifth by the end of the first lap. Williams was the on ly Pee Wee rider who wa s do ubling th e 40- fo o ter in fron t of the specta tors in the pits. Willi ms had Severinsen in a his sights with two laps re maining and got past him over the double and then charged for the leader, Hass. Williamsgot past Hass with one lap remaining, but Hass stuck it back in front , getting arou nd Williams in the whoops. Williams kept it pinned this time over the infield dou ble and too k the lead . Hass kept his speed on the gro und to catch up back to Williams, but Williams' Polini overpowered Hass' KTM over the last dou ble, and he too k the secon d-mota win for the overall with a 2-1 score . Hass ( 1-2) settled for seco nd. Severinsen went 3-3 for third. "Flyin' Ryan" Gilbe rt was on t he gas in the first 13·24 mota, taking th e w in. Matt Mraz took seco nd, ahead of Jacob Gre ate ns. Gilbe rt was once again out front in mota two but too k a soil sample and tallied a DNF. Mraz e nded up with th e wi n and th e ove rall via 2-1 sco res . Greate ns (3-2) was seco nd.
