With moist, brown din lurking just below the surface and muddy sections at a minimum, the course was a case study fo r "Velcro" riding technique . The "Velcro" technique, of course, is the innate ability to maintain traction at a level that allows one t o ride at maximum velocity with maxim um confidence, In many cases causing peo ple to feel as though they have inherited supe rhuman riding abilities. This process is usually followed by the age-o ld practice of sharing one's greatness with others. The course itself com bined awesome single-track through the hllty pine forest interspersed with some grassy open areas cornmon to the region. With lots of short but steep uphilland downhill chutes, as well as a quartermile of muddy creek bottom tha t smelled more like the New York. City sewer system than any· thing tha t should be in a forest, there was a condition to test everyone's ability. With only one special test "check-in," the riders who lived dangerously and rode hot were rewarded with low scores , while the mor e conserva tive riders saw the long sections take a toll on their scores as time ticked down past their minutes. The rider who too k grea test advantage of these conditions ~ and (for the day. anyway) was superhuman - was Kawasaki joc key Dave Ne umeis ter. Blitz ing to his first ove rall w in of the year, Neumeister fin ished a fu ll four points ahead of Yamaha rider Ron Schmelzle. T he points t ight en e d u p with Sch m e lzle , tho ugh, as the second through 10th po sitions were se parated by on ly six points. Rounding o ut t he AA and overall podium wa s Walker Lue dtke, t he Yama ha r id e r finish ing just a point back of Schme lzle. With 2 1 ride rs e ntered, the Vet A class was the largest of the A classes , and the fastest of these old dogs was Philip West. Acquiring just 14 points , the Yamaha-mou nted West finished sixth overall, beati ng half of the M class and all the you nger displacement -class co mpet itors. Eric Burghardt com piled a 20·point sco re to secure second place, while Jere my Henley took the final Vet A trophy, another thre e poi nts back of Burghardt. The class of the B class was another Vet rider, Gary Cogswell , who piloted his KTM to an IB-po int scor e that was good for 15th in the overall standings and would have earned him second, behind West , had he been riding the A class. In fact, Cogswell and West rode together on m inute 10, which must have be e n a fast place to be, as O pe n A winner Geo rge Villanyi was also on this minute . Overall C -c1ass hon ors we nt to Just in Warning. w ho took his KTM to an IB' po int score on the shorter C course, besting secondplace finisher Clark Lee by four points. RESULTS AA , I . 0...
