and Hawk closing fast, the stage was set for a dramatic last lap. A few races ago, Raineswas in the same position, only to be run down by Smith. And once again, lapped traffic made his dash to the checkers a scary one. "We had a couple of different lines at the bottom of a hill, and I had been going to the outside," Raines said. "There was a lapper on the inside, and I was following him up the hill, and allof a sudden he just broke loose and got stuck. I had to make a quick abort and get out of there. I just barely made it. But the fans, you know, they were so goo d out there that I know they would have dragged my bike up the hill if I didn't make it." Raines did make it and was able to hold on untilthe finish. In second, Hawk made it a one-two Am Pro Yamaha sweep with his final push. "On the last lap I was pushing real hard and caught up to Rodney," Hawk said. '" knew there wasn't much time. Then he made a little mistake when his back end kicked out . I rode by him and thought , 'Thanks a lot . And I hope you don 't catch back up to me!'" Even though Smith's charge didn't work out, he was able to kee p a positive outlook about his finish . "Jason rode a great race ," Smith said. "I wasn 't on my game today. I was trying to pick it up as much as I could and maybe press ure him into a mistake. I don't know if Icould have made a pass , but Iwas hoping for a mistake . But I e nded up making a mistake , and Barry got by me . I didn't even know Barry was beh ind me. , tried to get up and catch him, but he was riding well. My goal today was to be top-three, and if I went home without getting hurt , I'd be happ y." eN ' Purchase a 2003 or prior Mille R, Haga or Edwards Edition, Mille, Falco or Futura and get your choice of a new Scarabeo Ditech 50 or SR Ditech 50 Scooter FREE.
