Tommy Hayden went too hard into tum
three with flve to go , Gobert slipping by up
the inside and stillat speed. There was more
dear track ahead with Gobert .554 in fro nt
with four laps to go , Hayden making another run into three on the next lap.
"I knew there were a few laps to go , and
I had to try to do something," Hayden said.
"I didn't really know where it was go ing to
be ; I didn't really care ."
Starting the 27th lap Hayde n again blew
by on the front straight, Gobert on his tail
and on the inside going into tum three. Once
again, Gobert went up the inside , but
Hayden had the better line and raced to the
horseshoe, only to lose the spot to the
inside-lined Gobert.
With two laps to go they were side by
side at the strip, the Kawasaki clearly the
faster bike .
Over to tum three Gobe rt had the rear
wheel hopping o ff the ground. He tried to
stuff up the inside the n thought better of it
and followed Hayden through the infield .
W ith no one in front o f him , Hayde n took
the white flag with a lead of .574 of a second. Gobert had to make the move into
tum three, but he was too far back. Hayden
left an inside opening, but Go be rt had no
chance. There was traffic ahead in the
caro use l and again through the esess,
Hayden coming up on the pair in the final
comer on to the straight, but they ran wid e,
and Hayden sped to victory.
"I knew the front tire I had was probably
softe r," Gobert said. "I was getting to the
po int that the last time we both ran wide
down there on the brakes , I actually tucked
the front. I hit a little hole. I thought, 'We ll,
if Ido it again, I'm probably going to put it on
the ground if I try to do it.'''
DiSalvo said afte r passing Roger Lee
Hayden there was a gap to the leaders.
" Iclosed the gap a little bit fo r a time, but
t hen I made a few small mistakes, and the
tires went off and that kind o f th ing,"
DiSalvo said. "I'm happy with a third
through. It's nice to ge t back up on the podieN
um ."
