"T he thing was really slipping around a lot, and I was doing all I could," Yates said. "It was spinning up so bad around the turn [three] over there, and I was just trying to get on the brakes - just trying to get in there deep. Every time I picked up the gas in the middle of turn three, the last turn over there, right in the middle of the turn the t hing would come around . It was a handful." Duhamel saw the checkered nag coming up and took his final shot. " Last lap I was wide open all the way around, and so was he, and we were p re tty much slid ing , both of us , and d idn't want to make any mistake thinking Mat [Mladin] had a pretty bad weekend," Duhamel said . "Obviously it wasn't that good for him , but I wish it would have been maybe a little worse. No offense. When you pit stop, it's usually worse ." From the final corner to the line Duhamel drag raced Yates. " I w as going to go for the big old stuff move, but he knew," Du hamel said. " T he n I tried to sq uare him up. You're so frustrated , yo u're full throttle, and you 're ju m p ing on the seat trying to get tract io n. I w as trying to get by him ." The difference was two bikelengths. Ben Bostrom was II seconds back in fifth with Mladin recovering t o finish sixth after a qu ick pit stop on the l8th lap . He was the last rid e r on the lead lap . UPCOMING ROUNDS: Round 9/ 10· Elkhart lake, Wisconsin, June 5-6 Round 11. Brainerd, Minnesota, June 26·27 Continued from page '7 amongthe riders who welcomed Chandler's return, sort of. "I was reallypleased to see Eric Bostrom won at Pikes for o fifth time in the eight-year history of the event. Doug," he said after qualifying just in front of Chandler in Formula Xtreme . "He's raced GPs, but not just raced, was a factor in GPs, and he's always been a factor here, so I'm very pleased to see him up there. Well, maybe not that pleased. He's doinggood. And it's good for the series to have Doug back." HMC Ducati Milwaukee's Mitch Han sen decided to go racing for the same reason as Chandler - he loves it. And partly because of the way AMA Pro Racing has fumbled supermoto . "We had the crew all together, and we were supposed to do the KTM deal in supermoto," Hansen said, "but the AMA had no schedule yet. KTM couldn't commit to us any more. We had the whole crew. It's our first love is to get back to road racing." Hansen said he needs to keep his race team employed and that it was a shame to have "a guy like Doug Chandler sitting at home . We want to prove to everybody we're stilla force . Mygoal is to get Doug a Superb ike ride next year. Whether that's achievable or not , I don't know. That's where he belongs." The team is getting some techn ical support from Ducati Corse, but it's basicallyan in-house deal led by crew chief Gary Medley. HMC Ducat; Milwaukee, Hansen 's Ducati/Aprilia/KTM/ Suzuki dealership in Saukville, Wisconsin, is the main sponsor. Options Italia, a branch of Lockhart-Phillips, is also pitching in. With Lockhart-Phillips sponsoring the Formula Xtr eme class, it' s a good fit. The team has product suppo rt from EBC Brakes, Silkolene Oils, DID Chain, Bucci clutches , and Dunlop tires . There isn't much left of the Formula Xtreme 749R now that it's in nearSupe rbike trim. The stock forks have been replaced with gas-charged Ohlins with an Ohlins shock in the rear. Red Marvic wheels run front and rear, the fro nts left over fro m the 2002 Superibike program . The engine is close to World Supersport configuration with a racing clutch. "We have the luxury of developing the thing through the course of the year," Hansen said. "This motorcycle fits the class ve ry well." Chandler first sat o n the bike on Friday morn ing. So good is Chandler at setting up the bike that he was pretty close by the end of the day. Hansen said they were getti ng setup data from Ducati's World Supersport team. Graves Motorsports Yamaha's Da mon Buckmaster ended his championship hopes when he pulled out of the Repsol Superstock race on Saturday afternoon , citing the pain and discomfort in his broken right wrist. "I'm not going to race . It' s the smartest thing to do: ' said Buckmaster, who suffered a nondisplaced scaphoid fracture last week at Barber Motorsports Park. Buckmaster carne to Barber third in the championship behind teammates Jamie Hacking and Aaron Gobert. "Inevitably, it will be two races; I'llmiss (PPIR and) Road America,.. he said. 'Y\t least I'll be healthy for Brainerd . And if I can finish the year on a strong note , that will be a plus. I'd rathe r than be celebrating a victory at the end of Continued on page 2 , ......iII~.IIl E W5 • JUNE 2, 2004 19
