strokes certainly dominated. Of the 40
bikes that qualified at least 32 were
thumpers. James Stewart, one of the few
two-stroke-mounted riders, however, finished out on top, and Ryan Hughes, on the
KTM, was the next-best-finishing twostroke rider in fifth overall.

Motocross-tumed-off-road racer Bobby
Bonds did not make it to the Hangtown
race. Bonds, who nearly won a moto at
Hangtown a few years ago and is a local
favorite, was hoping to line up a ride for the
Hangtown race, but apparently that d id not
happen. Bonds is currently running second
in the World Off-Road Championsh ip

Long-time Hangtown hero and former factory Yamaha motocrosser Donnie Cantalo u pi, however, did make it out to th is

early 1980. and was a top National rider in
his heyday. Cantaloupi had his career cut
short when a roc k flew up and broke his

who spent much of the day hanging out
with his former tuner Sevo Forti, says he 's
been getting bac k into rac ing again, but
mostly on 'vintage bikes .
Boost Mob ile/Yamaha/Troy Racing's Bro c k

broke his wrist when he cased his bike over

(31 -10) in the 12Scc class .
Kevin Windham str uggled at
Hangtown, but he d id finish

Ricky Carmichael on the switch from the
two-stroke to the four-s troke : "I've
been doing this a long time, and I know
how to adapt to something - it's like trying
to adapt to a new track," he said. " It' s a lot
different. My bike setup is a little more neutral [than the 2SOcc]. and it has a lot of
torque. If you want to be competitive or
make it a little easier on yourself, you want
to be on the four-stroke, at least for the
outdoors."
