James Stewart, one of the few two-stroke-mounted riders, however, finished out on top, and Ryan Hughes, on the KTM, was the next-best-finishing twostroke rider in fifth overall. French rider Ma tthieu Lalloz and Ryan Mo rais did some last-minute team changes for the start of the outdoor National MX Series. Lalloz was let go by the Samsung/Radio Shack Yamaha team and was picked up by the Moto XXX squad, and Mora is left the Red Bull KTM team to compete in Canada for the Blackfoot Honda team. Lalloz finished out the 12Scc class in 2Sth (2S- 19) and Morais in ninth (I B-7) . Both rode Honda CRF250R four strokes. Greg Schnell o f the Amso il/C haparral Ho nda team did not compete at Hangto w n, Schnell cracked a couple of ribs at the Supercross finale at Las Vegas and is expected to miss the first fe w rounds of the National Series. Motocross-tumed-off-road racer Bobby Bonds did not make it to the Hangtown race. Bonds, who nearly won a moto at Hangtown a few years ago and is a local favorite, was hoping to line up a ride for the Hangtown race, but apparently that d id not happen. Bonds is currently running second in the World Off-Road Championsh ip Ser ies. Long-time Hangtown hero and former factory Yamaha motocrosser Donnie Cantalo u pi, however, did make it out to th is year's Hangtown Classic - but as a spectator. Cantaloup i, who lives in nearby Stockton, was a Hangtown favorite back in the early 1980. and was a top National rider in his heyday. Cantaloupi had his career cut short when a roc k flew up and broke his ann wh ile racing in Europe. Cantaloupi, who spent much of the day hanging out with his former tuner Sevo Forti, says he 's been getting bac k into rac ing again, but mostly on 'vintage bikes . Boost Mob ile/Yamaha/Troy Racing's Bro c k Sellards reinjured his thumb and wrist when he crashed duri ng the Dun lop Day at Hangtow n on Wed nesday. Sellards originally broke his wrist when he cased his bike over a jump at the Binghamton National in New York last year. Despite having only about a 10-degree range of motion of the very swollen wrist, he still finished 17th overall (31 -10) in the 12Scc class . Kevin Windham str uggled at Hangtown, but he d id finish seco nd in the first mota. At fifth overall Sean Hamblin was the top-finishing rider on a two-stroke. Ricky Carmichael on the switch from the two-stroke to the four-s troke : "I've been doing this a long time, and I know how to adapt to something - it's like trying to adapt to a new track," he said. " It' s a lot different. My bike setup is a little more neutral [than the 2SOcc]. and it has a lot of torque. If you want to be competitive or make it a little easier on yourself, you want to be on the four-stroke, at least for the outdoors." CYCLE NEWS • MAY 26,2004 15
