Superbikers2 Supermoto Series Round I: Briggs and Stratton Motorplex at Road America Diedrich Tops Superbikers Opener PHOTOS BYTARABOGART/GINGERSNAP S By MARK WOLBRINK ELKHART LAKE, WI, APR. 25 T he first round of the Superbikers2 Supermoto Series started with everyone standing in the pits, trying to see through the thick morning fog. They were trying to get a glimpse of the new dirt section. The rainstorms on Saturday night wou ld prevent t he section from being run on th is Sunday, so everybody had to settle fo r endurance race stories fro m Saturday's two-hour event. The Lightweight class saw a two-time class champion taking o n a crop of new guys riding t he smaller-displacement fou r-strokes . Ron Zastrow raced the Middlewe ight class last year but see med to take to the smaller bikes, as he won the day 's heat race on his new YZ250F. Steve Reinke and Stephen Polizzi crossed the finish line in second and th ird. Zastrow took another holesh o t in the mai n, but Reinke sh owed ho w he earned bo th o f his championships by sho ving his t wo -stro ke Honda de ep in the off-camber left-h and turn to take th e lead position . Zast row tried to charge back but was forced to spe nd most of the race foll o w ing Reinke . Polizzi once aga in ha d command of third place. Throughout t he main, Reinke w ou ld b laze into the tu rn s , a nd Zastrow would catch up on th e ex its. Right before t he white nag, Zastrow got the dr ive he ne e d e d to ge t by Rei nke and rod e a n extremely defe nsive last lap to take the win. With a lo t of th e fast guys ru nn ing bo t h Middlewe ight and Premier, the names in front are o fte n t he sam e in bot h. In t he Premier heat, Cole Walsdorf, Scott Diedr ich and Ben Carlson shot out to the fro nt . Local riders Davi d Kilken ny and Pa ul Buettner found themselves in fourth and fifth, wit h a large pack chasing the m do w n. In the e nd. Diedrich and Carlson we re a close one-two, and Walsdorf, Kilkenny and Bue tt ne r finishe d an amazing three-four-five. Diedrich, Carlson, Walsdorf and Kilken ny lined up across the fro nt ro w for the start of the Premier main. Walsdorf and Diedrich got In t he Mini classes, Matt Stor k delivered the goods in both the 85cc ( 12- 15) and Supermin i classes , scori ng fo ur mota wins. The Warren , O hio, rider was followed home in the 8Scc (12- 15) contest by Mark Sedmak of Co nneaut . Oh io . and Ryan Gre en of Fran klin, Penn sylvan ia. Sedm ak again led Green in the Supermi ni division , but Eric Stewart of ne ar by Asht abula, O hio, was able to squeeze his Honda CRaS into secon d, dropping those two back a spot. Ben Carlson finished a close second in the Premier main at the Briggs and Stratton Motorplex. great start s. Kilke nny was right behind t hem on his big Husqvarna, holding Carlson in fourt h for the first couple of laps. Carlson found his w ay around Kilke nny an d then Wa lsdorf en route to catch ing Diedrich. O nce again , Kilkenny closed in on Walsdorf, with Buettner giving chase . As Ca rlson was app lying pres sure t o Diedric h, t he ne xt three racers w e re getting stu ck dealing with lappers. Kil kenny juked his w ay t hrough the crowd int o third a nd was able to pu t a little distance on Walsdorf and Buettner. Diedric h succe ssfully held off Carlson and took the win . Kilkenny see med to be cruising around the trac k, as he took a strong third .
