Po meroy grabbed the lead off the start, but on the second of five laps Sass relegated him to second spot, with Dan Greenwood nipping at Pomeroy's heels . Then on the fourth lap, Greenwood d isappeared. allowing Pomeroy to finish a comfortable sec ond . The second Over 50 mota started the same way - Pomeroy with the holeshot, then pushed and passed by Sass. This time , however, Greenwood followed Sass around Pomeroy, and that's the way they finished . Sass got the overall win, while Pomeroy's 2-3 finishes were good enough for second. Among the Over 50 Intermediates, Larry Shope rode his Honda to the class win w ith 2-1 finishes ahead of the 5-3 of john Wells. Sass' second win came in Sportsman 250 Expert, this time under pressure from Yamaha-mounted Tom McKinney from Pollock Pines, California . In the first mota, Sass and McKinney opened up a gap over the battle for third between Steve Parker and Paul Dunne. with the latter running into problems late in the race . The second mota was a repeat - McKinney chasing Sass and Dunne hounding Parker. Th is time. however, Dunne saw the race to its conclusion and was third over Parker. But Parker's 3-4 placings were all that was needed to take third spot overall behind Sass and McKinney. McKinney ran away from the rest of the Over 40 Expert field, leaving Dunne to collect a pair of second-place finishes on his Husky . Alex Reid, rid ing a Bultaco, was fourth behind Greenwood in the opening mota, but earned th ird for the day w ith 4-3 finishes after Greenwood failed to complete all of the laps in the second mota. There was also some good, close racing among the Over 40 Intermediates on the track at the same t ime, w ith Colorado's Tom Sharkey taking the first -m ota win ove r james Cochran from Indiana. Cochran earned the mota - and overall - win in close action the second time out, with Tom Rogers rebounding fro m first-race problems to finish second in the mo ta and fourth overall behind Sharkey and Eric Benso n. Poole and Mcintosh met again in C lassic 500 Expert, where the pair bat tled in the first mota before Poole was able to creep away for the w in. With the Triumph broken , Poole borrowed jim Cameron's BSA 350 for the second mota. Initially he ran in third, beh ind Mcintosh and Husqvarna-mounted Bruce Kelley, but then Poole got up to speed and reeled in the leaders late in the race for the w in. Kelley was second , and his 3-2 finishes beat Mcintosh 's 2-3 for second overall.
