Gianc:arlo De MAY 26, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS The big guns unfurled their colors and blasted the rest with both barrels in Superpole , and the biggest-calibe r rifle of the lot, Regis"Superpo le" Laconisecured his third Superpole of the season. Last away, he ended up leading an identical front row to that which finished final qualifying. The front row from regular qualifying was replicated in the final results. There fore Laconiseeured his third Superpole win of the year on the factory Fila Ducati, chased hard by the burgeo ning talent of Chris Vermeulen, on the Ten Kate Honda CBRIOOORR. "MySuperpole lap was smooth , but I felt immediately that the front tire wasn't per feet," Laconisaid. "In fact I lost the front at Ascari and as a result a little bit of time . Ifit hadn't been for that, I could have got under Im48s, but Iam happy anyway. The bike's race setting is good. my lap time on race tires is good. and we will see what happens tomorrow. We have been working we llthis weekend to get a good feeling here with the bike. Monza is a great place to race ; there is always a big fight with everyone . This track is so fast, but my bike is so fast also, and I am not worried about the speed!" Pier-Francesco Chiligrabbed third again, using his 998R-based machine after a short dalliance with his single-sided swingarm 999RS. Front-row qualification was a measurable reward for the Renegade Ducati team rider Noriyuki Haga, especially at such a fast circuit, and his team 's joy was redoubled when the emerging talent of Renegade Ducati's Leon Haslam went fifth fastest. Another hard day in the high-speed office of James Toselandput him sixth overall, with the young Briton aiming to consolidate his second-place standing in the series after three rounds. The leveling out of the playingfield in 2004, thanks to the adoption of the single make tire regulation , has allowed riders like Gianluca Nannelli to secure a start of seventh after Superpole, ridinga Team Pedercini Ducati 998RSin aggressive fashion. Chris Walker rode with total abandon to a third row start on the Petro nas, running out ninth on the time sheets . Xero x Ducati's Garry McCoy, a race winner in Australia, rounded out the top ten of what was another close Superpole competition - save for the magic meted out by Laconi. r-tan ee ( I:5 1.558); 19.
