The skies threatened to rain all day but gave out just e nough moistur e to keep the track dust-free and provide plenty of tra ction. For th ose who showed up to race on th is day, chance s are th at either the y or someone they knew got caught In the starting gate . The gate show ed no mercy, and it see me d t hat riders of every skill leve l were easy prey. During moto one of the Evolution class, Inte rmediate Husky ride r Ed Reyes lodged his fro nt wheel very nicely into the backward-falling trap. Reyes w ill usu a lly pu ll a goo d hol e s ho t on t he competition , but not th is t ime! He en de d up playing a nice game of ca tch -up du ring the entire moto. Meanwhile, Expe rt Ted Fitzgerald went out and cleaned up for the ove rall win on his circa- 1977 RM2S0. In the secon d mot o , th e sta rt ing gat e claimed not o ne but two ride rs . Novice Yamaha rider Patrick Crask was so amused as he watched the two trying to get t he ir b ike s out of t he gate t hat he himse lf momentarily forgot to take off. " I was just so fascinate d by the sight of Doughty caught in the gate," Crask said later. Doughty, who had finished second ove rall in moto one, now had his wo rk cut out for him. He threa ded his way back th rough the pack on his Maico 2S0 and had to charge through such riders as Open-class riders Tim Henry and Tom Fitzgerald. Montesa mounted james Doyle easily led the grou p, but Tom McElhenney, Allan Gled hilland Cras k were having it out. McElhen ney, who finished second in the first moto, fell in a sandy, tight section of t he trac k, so Gledhill and Cras k fought it out fo r se c ond - p la ce ho no r s . Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada Round 6: Camp Valley Cowboys MC Pinio n Pine Hare Scrambles Mini Warriors Hit MRAN By MICHAEL COLLINS HIKO, NV APR. 17 , T he Mini warriors arr ived In full force to do batt le with th eir cohorts at the Camp Valley Co wboys Pinio n Pine Hare Scram bles outside of Hiko, Nevada. In Pee We e act ion , KTM SO ride r Roddy Cambe ll came out swinging and t o o k t o p honors in the Pee Wee Expe rt class, followed by Hunter Tyler in second and Mason Bake r a clo se t hird . In the Amat e ur d ivisio n, Haile y Marshall ran away from the co mpetition. " Rid ing th rou gh t he trees wa s so co o l," sta ted Marshall. The biggest st ory of the day was that th e Supermini Expe rts we re given the op port unity to ru n the bike co urse with all the big bikes. Th e Superminis we re held up for 20 minutes afte r t he mass st a rt or the Big-Bike No vice class . O nc e t he b an ne r dro pped , the Supe rminis sounded like a herd of chainsaw s ru n ning th ro ugh t he Pin ion Pines . A battl e bega n between KTM jocke y justin Wallis and Yama ha-m o unted Curt Lam mert (t he lat t e r having just moved up to the Expert class afte r dom inat ing t he Supe rmini Ama teur class at previo us races). Wallis and Lamme rt exchanged positions th ro ughout the ir 30-mile loop. When t he Super minis appeared from the tr ee s, Wallis wa s le adi ng, and he finished first. La mme rt settled for seco nd. "The best pa rt of th e race wa s th e t ight trees and all the single-track tra ils," exclaimed an excited Lammert. With the Supe rmini Experts ge tt ing to run with the big bikes, it was t ime for the Supenni ni Amateurs to take some of the limelight and lead the pac k of t he rest of t he Supe rm inis an d Minis. Zach Watso n, a boa rd his Gon e W ild Yamaha YZ8S, led from start to finish for his first overall or the season . The real battle was in the Mini Expe rt class, among Kade Wadsworth, Tallon Taylo r and Alec He rsh . Th e se t hree riders ' batt le started at the first t urn , whe re Tallon drew first blood , with He rsh right on his hee ls. During the first loo p, Wadsworth had to play catch-up with Taylor and Hersh. Once the three riders got togeth er, th ey started picking away at the Supermini Amateurs and No vices.
