Southwest Vinta ge Racing gro up held
ro und four of the year-long se rie s at Piru
Motocross Park. The skies threatened to rain all
day but gave out just e nough moistur e to keep
the track dust-free and provide plenty of tra ction.
For th ose who showed up to race on th is
day, chance s are th at either the y or someone
they knew got caught In the starting gate . The
gate show ed no mercy, and it see me d t hat
riders of every skill leve l were easy prey. During
moto one of the Evolution class, Inte rmediate
Husky ride r Ed Reyes lodged his fro nt wheel
very nicely into the backward-falling trap. Reyes
w ill usu a lly pu ll a goo d hol e s ho t on t he
competition , but not th is t ime! He en de d up
playing a nice game of ca tch -up du ring the
entire moto. Meanwhile, Expe rt Ted Fitzgerald
went out and cleaned up for the ove rall win on
his circa- 1977 RM2S0.
In the secon d mot o , th e sta rt ing gat e
claimed not o ne but two ride rs . Expert Rick
Dou ght y an d Novic e jaso n Dot y both sa t
be wildered as the re st o f the pack left th e m
beh ind. Novice Yamaha rider Patrick Crask was
so amused as he watched the two trying to get
t he ir b ike s out of t he gate t hat he himse lf
momentarily forgot to take off.
" I was just so fascinate d by the sight of
Doughty caught in the gate," Crask said later.
Doughty, who had finished second ove rall in
moto one, now had his wo rk cut out for him.
He threa ded his way back th rough the pack on
his Maico 2S0 and had to charge through such
riders as Open-class riders Tim Henry and Tom
Fitzgerald.

said that It should be taken apart and greased,
but no on e ad mitte d t o just be ing a bit to o

By day 's end, e ve ryo ne was mum bling a
