Sports Ride rs Association of Colorodo Supercross Roce , : Denver Coliseum Campbell Cleans Upl By SUSIE NAEGEl DENVER, CO, APR. 10 T he first race of the 2004 supe rcro ss season for t he Sports Riders Association of Colorado was held at the Coliseum in Denver. Co lo rado. It d rew a large field of racers, including natio nal Pro ride r Te d Cam pbell , who pulled a hat t rick, going home with the first-place purse in all three Pro main events. Campbell moved to Colorado last summer, and t he Hond a rider has ma de a habit of entering the local SRA races when he is not C out on the national circu it . Desp ite the pr essur e of having t o qualify for the 125cc main event earlier in the day and racing against se aso ne d Pro s, 17-year-old Ch ris Flesia got the drop on the 125cc Pro class and impressively led the charge on his Suzuki for three laps befor e conceding t he 52 front position to C ampbe ll. The sho rt laps quickly had th e top 10 riders running into the tail end of the class, forcing them to weave the ir way thr ough lapped traffic wh ile still jockeying for position . Suzuki rider Robert Kiniry crossed the finish line after Campbell to take second, followed by Honda-mounted Matt Karlsen, and Ya m a ha racers Logan Darien and Shawn Morgan rounded out the top five. In the Open Pro class, Campbell again lost out on t he holeshot. t his t ime to Morgan ; however, he railed past Morgan on the first lap and took off, leaving Morgan and the rest of the class to battle it out . While Morgan held on to seco nd place, Kip 5ande ll and Darien, both on Y amahas, methodically moved up from midpack to finish a respecta ble t hird and fourth , with Chad Zulian taking fifth place on his Honda. The 250cc race was the final main even t of the night. Seconds later, the 2S0cc class burst out of the tun nel and blasted st raight do wn the mid dle of the arena toward the first t urn. Campbell wa s in the lead , finally getting the coveted holeshot; following closely was Yamaha ride r And y At kins . While Karlsen pressu red Atkins, Kiniry sneaked by both of them on the fourt h la p, whi le Campbell moved out and opened up his lead . With Campbell virtu ally uncatcha ble, Karlsen passed Atkins and chased Kiniry dow n on the ninth lap , o nly to have Kiniry take it back and finish the race in second place. Karlsen crossed t he line in t hird, wit h Kawasaki rider Doug Leavitt in fourth . Sandell finished out the night in fifth. Always a crowd favorite , the SOcc ra cers lo oke d fea rless on the big supercross t rack. Kawasaki rider Gavin Silver took first place in both the 50cc (7-8) 5tock and 50cc Combi ned classes , wh ile Austin Powell ruled on his Yamaha in t he 50cc (4-8) Injector class. Gree r Marshall ro de to victory in the 50cc (4- 6) 5tock class, and Hond a hotshot Chris Kinney blast e d his 4 0 t h Anniversary way to a first-place finish in the 50cc (4-8) TwoStroke/Four-Stroke event.
