Each team had a larger clutch bike, a midsize bike , and a 50cc bike. Hal:lcyard Ral:ing STORY AND PHOTOS BY STEVE BRUHN e n backyard minibike racing started out with big /l ittle even ts like "Langtown ," w ho wou ld have thought all th is p laying wo uld le ad to a full- o n minibi ke supe rcross in Las Vegas in a full arena wit h riders like Je re my McGrath, Jeff Emig, Jeff Stanton and Guy Cooper all on the track at once? Welcome to the Parts Unlimited Minimoto Supercross National, a unique experiment that turned out right. The eve nt drew 384 entries on the trickest minibikes you'll find, and the Orleans Arena was just about full with 5200 in the stan ds. The eve nt also featured a vendor's row of minibike gadgets and tricks with companies like Sana and Red Baron showing off the ir goo ds. To make the pro gram even more fun, Michelle Stephenson (formerly Miss Aren across) brought three umbrella girls, and Aaron Smith of Oh io did ramp-to-ramp backflips o n his TTR 90 . Practice and qualifying we re held in the afternoon, and the night program was all racing. Rob Buydos (new -hire announcer for outdoo r nationa ls) and ESPN's Jamie Little were the announc ers , but both got out on the track and raced themselves. Little had the Women's class won, but she fell on the last lap. The best race was SOcc Mod Pro, W 46 whe re Guy Cooper, on one of his trick Extreme Minis, led just abo ut the whole mota with Jere my McGrath charging hard up from a weak start to get on his fender, but Tommy Hoffmaster was right o n McGrath and made a last-lap pass on them both for the win. There was also a class just for sponsors, which is important in a new branch of the sport since a lot of the sponsors specialize /-MY 19,2004 • CYC LE N EWS in mini parts , and of co urse they ride, too . The event also made room for a little more sill iness than a usual supercross.
