April weekend . Nearly 600 entries flooded the

TT and half mile nationals over a two-day peri .

eligible for travel money to the AMA:s Gra nd
Champions hips in Springfield, Illino is.
The action started Saturday moming on the
short track and shifted to the TT early in the
evening. Sunday 's half mile closed the first of
five AHA Amateur Nationals o f 2004 .
The Premier classes were hotly contes ted .
T h e SOcc Sen ior St ock ( 7. 1 I ) class wa s
dominated by Earl's Racing's Ethan Gillim. The
little Kentuckian won all three rounds . Ethan's
big brother Ha yd e n took t he 6Scc Mod ified
(7-1 1) class, over Jake Lew is and Kody Vaughn;
all th ree cla imed wins , but Hayd e n's two
second -place finis hes powered him to the win.
Michigan's Michael Johnson swept the 8Scc
Modified (7- 11) class on his Universal Coatings
Honda . Illinois' Dakota Brown-Simmo ns wo n
th e 2SOcc Mod ifie d/Four·Stroke class , despite
Mich igander Jack Maye r 's winning the TT and
half mile .
Another Illinois rider. Be llville Ho nda jockey
Just in Hanna , went undefeated in the 2SOcc
Mod ifiedfTwo -Slro ke class. Kent Briggs came
all the way fro m r-tan hatten, Kansas . to w in the
4S0cc Modified/Four-Stroke class with a w in
and two th irds . Briggs cam e right bac k in the
50Scc Modified class wi th tw o wins a nd a
sec ond.
The Veteran (Over 30) co ntest came down
to a ba tt le among th ree fo rmer Expe rt s.
Michigan riders Johnny Cooper and Mayer split
the wins with Illinois' Kevin Snyder, who also
captured two seconds to go with his TT win,
garne ring the t!dve! money for his 30-mile tr ip
to Springfield .
A ve ry wide groove developed on the small
sho rt trac k, resul ting in so me t ight racing.
Georgia's Brett Sassaman ran away with the
12Scc main, but the skirmish for seco nd was
great, as Katie Hawkins outbatt led Kyle Snyder
and Ricky Bole y.
T he 2SOcc Mod ified fTwo -Stro ke final was a
Jo hnso n . over Hayd e n and Frankie Lee .
Thornton, N ick Page, Jona than He ide n , Brett
Pugh and Lewis made up the rest o f the tightly
bunched leaders.
Hayden, Thornton and Ethan on ce again
locked up in a t ight race for the 6 Scc DT X
win. Ian Keith and Andrew Jo hnso n stayed
close.
In half mile ac tion , Brett Sassaman and Kyle
Sn yd er du e led all the w ay in t he 12S cc
Mod ified main, w ith Brett pulling out the wi n.
Mayer, Brown-Simmons and O>az Landers had
a gre at race in the 2SOcc Modified/Four-Stroke
race. Mayer won , with Landers second .
