Woodford OMA Thunder Valley Cross Country Alessi Wins Four-Stroke National Ho nda's Mike Alessi took top honors at the third round of the Western Four-Stroke National Series in Victorville, California. on April 25. Alessi went head to head against KTM'sRyan Hughes and 18 other Pros before he could claim the number-one tro phy. The Is-year·old Ales si, aboard a CRF4s0R, won both rnotos , which included a full-on duel with Hughes in the first moto . In the second mo to , Hughes got tangled up in a first-turn pile-up and never got the chance to run with Alessi , who got away cleanly. Hughes still go t up to finish second and went 2-2 for second overall. Jason McCo rm ick, o n a 4s0cc KTM, finished out the day third overall with a 5·3 moto tally, while Honda rider Shane Bess (3-10) and Yamaha-mou nte d Dustin Nelson (6-6) rou nded out the top five overall. Team Green Kawasaki's Chuck Woodford enjoyed the extremely muddy conditions in East Rochester, Ohio, to take the overall win at the Pirelli Thunder Valley Cross Country, round two of the Parts Unlimited Off-Road motorcycle and ATV National Series, on April 25. O hio's own Wood ford , who is known for his mud-riding prowess, chased down Yamaha rider Jimmy Jarrett and KTM's Brian Garrahan, who too k turns leading the first two laps of the seven-lap race . Woodford ended up winning the 20-rider Pro class in a time of two hours, three minutes and 58 seconds. Jarrett finished two minutes back in second, with Kawasaki rider Brett Zolfcheck finishinga distant third. Garrahan ended up fourth, with Yamaha rider Just in Kawasaki Team Wi lliamson Green's Chuck rounding out the Waodford shined in top five, the mud at the KTM 's Shane Thunder Valley XC. Watts finished 13th after starting off last from the dead -engine start, and Kawasaki's Cole Calkins DNF'd with clutch problems. Watts and Calkins finished 1-2 in the series opener last month in Arkansas. 10 MAY 5,2004 • CYCLE NEWS An Advertising Award AHA Pro Racing has announced that it will recognize outstandi ng advertising during its annual AHA Pro Racing Awards Banquet in November. Two awards will be given : one for best print ad and one for best TV ad, according to a press release issued by AHA Pro Racing . Kerry Graeber, vice president , director of communications will present the awards and is excited about the new award category. "Motorcycle manufactu rers, as well as leading aftermarket companies that participate in racing, make win advertising an important part of their marketing mix, and we 're looking forward to recognizing their efforts," said G raeber. "Fo r companieswho race, success on the race track is o nly part of the equation. Promoting that success thro ugh an effective advertisi ng campaign extends the message and can lead to improved sales o pportunities, which is, after all, why many com panies race in the first place." Graeber added that any advertising that promotes success in AMA-sanctioned pro fess ional Ducati Interested Barnes Takes Two In Moto Guzzi At Road America The press release was succinct. Ducati is interested in purchasing Moto Guzzi. Short and to the point, Ducati issued a press release last week that stated the following: "Ducati Motor Holding S.pA, a leading manufacture r of high-performance motorcycles. in re sponse to news recent- ly published in the press, today confirmed - as it has done in the past . its interest in Moto Guzzi. At the end of the due diligence process, Ducati will formally make an offer in the next few weeks. Any additional information published in the press is without foundation ." Stay tuned. Championsline.com's Michael Barnes rode his Yamaha R6 to victory in both the SportBike and SuperBike classes in round two of the Formula USA Series at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on April 25. The Florid ian topped Suzuk i-mounted Blake Young and R6-m ounted Scott Greenwood in the Sportbike class and then came back to beat Youngand Yamaha-mounted Shawn Conrad in the Superbike class. O the r class winners included Bue llmounted Daniel Bilanskyin the Thunderbike class and Conrad in Formula SportBike. 40th Anniversary motoreyde racingwillbe eligible for the competition.
