H is run may not have been spectacular, but it was demoralizing to the compet it ion. T his t ime, sect ion nine was not overtaken by any of t he top riders. The big slippery root rep resented an insurmount able obstacle, tamed on ly on th e second lap by a few. Anyway, t he two teammate contenders arrived tied until section 12, drawn on t he shore . Fuji failed it; Dougi e cleaned it! The difference of five po ints rema ined at the change of t he card . Lampkin has I I points. against t he 16 of Fujinami. N ot too distant w er e Raga ( 18) and Cabestany (20) . Th e seco nd lap was a maste rpiece for Lampkin. He cleaned section nine, which had beco m e almost impos sible for the mud and the slippery roots. Fujinami yielded and failed section 12 again. He lost his cool , fiving section 13 and making a bad three in section 14. This meant a drop of two positions and a fourth-place finish.
