Russ Pearson's strategy was to catch
and pass Brown and put enough distance
on him before the alte rnate gas , where he
could take another splash of gas without
giving up the lead . Just as he had hoped,
Pearson caught the leader, "in the big
gnarly whoops," and started putting distance between himself and Brown.
" Brian .was just struggling, and he
couldn't keep it straight," Russ said. "I'd
catch up and get dusted and have to back
off, catch up and get dusted, and finally I
caught up to him, and we both kind of
hairballed -it through the whoops."
Russ came out in front and charged
into the alternate gas w ith a IS-second
lead. He would never give it up and would
actually stretch the lead out to 40 seconds
before it was all over.

"It was a good day for me ; I mean it's
always a good day when you win ,"
Pearson said .
In spite of a "te rri ble, four-kick start,"
Brown, who led much of the race, just
couldn't hold Russ off on the day, putting
some of the blame on his suspension setup or "something" else.
"I just couldn't keep it straight in the
whoops," the Team Green rider said .
"So met hing seemed to be going on with
the suspension."
David Pearson, who finished third overall, was typically upbeat aftward. "It went
pretty good; I almost crashed at the start,
wo rked up to fourth , got around Kendall
Norman at the alternate (gas) on the first
loop, then got around Destry," he said.
The winner, Russell, finished out the 106mile race in a little over 2 1/2 hours . eN
