had a great day. finishing 10th overall and first in
the Vet O p e n Expert class aboard his York
C ycl e Sales/ Bear C ity Saw Work s-backed
KX500. Pierce was running 30th overall off the
bomb and knew he had to kick it up a no tch if
he wanted a good finish.
"I was really be hind o n the bomb and knew I
had to get to work qu ick!" exclaimed Pierce . "I
started picking other riders off right afte r the
start. I was battling with V3 [Brett Hoffma nI on
the first loop."
Pierce was a b le to take the lead w hen
Hoffman went down on the second loop.

" I saw Ray was ahead o f me and knew I had
to start picki ng it up, " expl ained We bster. " I
was pret ty cautious, because I knew we still had
90 miles ahead o f us. T his w as suc h a great
cou rse . It's rare to really o pe n the bike up. and
we were 80 m ph o ut there a lot tod ay!"
Sixteen-year-old Justin Morrow was the to p
N ovice finisher, and he also claimed the 0-200cc
N ov ice -class w in a bo ar d his Le o 's Outlaw

at the o pe ning ro und of the Roc ky Mountain Trials Association's C hamp ionship Se ries .
Tough sec tions and warm weather mad e fo r a
trying combination this earty in the season, and
high scores were the rule on th is day.
One exce ptio n to that r ule was Gas Gas mounted Keith Wineland. w ho has be e n the
RMTA cha mpion fo r the last three years. His

poi nts, Wineland be sted second -place finisher
