Pierce was running 30th overall off the bomb and knew he had to kick it up a no tch if he wanted a good finish. "I was really be hind o n the bomb and knew I had to get to work qu ick!" exclaimed Pierce . "I started picking other riders off right afte r the start. I was battling with V3 [Brett Hoffma nI on the first loop." Pierce was a b le to take the lead w hen Hoffman went down on the second loop. "T his w as a t o p-no tch ra ce! " said Pier ce . "Exce lle nt mix of singletrack and fast section s." Top ove rall honors went to American Honda ride r Steve Hengeve ld, who also finished first in the O pen Expert class ; Mike Baskin and Chuck McBu rney fin is hed second a n d th ird . respectively, in the Open class. "Hengeveld, Luke Dodson and myself were r unning neck and ne ck into the pits, but Hengeve ld put us away on the sec o nd loop in the fast sections ." Brett Saunders not only w on the 0-200cc Exp e rt d ivision, he was on e of the top "push through th e pa in" finishers as w el l.
