Texas Cross Country Racing Association
Round I: Malakoff Cross Country
Reddish Romps in the
MalakoH Mud
By MIKE SULUVAN
MALAKOFF, TX, FEB. 29
e t eo rologists will tell you that Texas is
home to some of the most violent thunderstorms on the planet , especially dur ing the
spring. Those who atten de d the opening round
of the Texas Cross Country RacingAssociation's
32nd season will not argue the point.
" We had up w a rds o f 750 r iders at t h is
event, an d abou t 400 o f th e m were rac ing
when the rain blew in," TCCRA pres ident Ross
Whitting said of a storm that bro ught w ith it
thunder and lightning and severe rainfall that fete
like hail. "It turned a really fine course into an
absolute mess in a matter of minutes ."
Neve rtheless, the deluge didn't pre vent race
pro mo te r Marty Ishmae l and the gr o up of
M
TCCRA officers and volunteers fro m getting in
an e ntire day of racing for all classes.
"We co uld have canceled th is th ing, but
people spend a lot of money and invest a ton of
energy to come out here and race ," Wh itting
said. "They're committed to the sport, and so
are we ."
The orga nizers cou ldn' t be stop ped, an d
ne ithe r co uld Two W he e l Wor ld rider Sea n
Reddish, who cleaned up in the mud aboard his
Honda CRF4S0R.
" I like the mud, and I was mentally prepared
for this one," Reddish said.
The Pro class started in the afternoon, well
aher the downpour had turned the trac k into a
swamp .
"I had three pass lines picked out in the first
mile, in case I didn't get t he holeshot ," Reddish
explained of his start.
Reddish was t hird coming ou t of the first
t urn , fo llcwtng 12-time TCCRA Pro -class
champion Clay Hoe nshell, who was riding his
Team Green/Granbury Motorsports Kawasaki
10<250. Once he got by Hoenshell , Reddish had
the lead, but all the rerouting necessary to
make the track ridable created some confusion.
"late in the first lap, I came up behind a guy
I had already passed, and I knew they still had
some sorting out to do ," Reddish noted.
In the end , both Re dd ish an d Ho e nsh ell
turne d in lap-time averages that woul d have
been respectable on a dry day, finishing onetwo at the checkered flag.
In other Sunday racing, David Lucas Jr. won
the Sem i-Pro event, Corey Doughty won the
12Scc Expert class, Randall Prewitt took top
honors in the 2SOcc Expert class, and James Hill
too k the checkered in the O pe n Expert class.
The Ladies and Mini riders survived t he day as
we ll, with Ca me ro n Ishmael pushing
his YZSS to the limit for the victory in
t he Mini Expert class and Jes sica
Callahan finishing on top in the ladies
Expert class.
Saturday was a different
e xperience altogether, wi th nearly
pe rfe ct raci ng co ndit ion s. The Pe e
Wee program saw Jason langford win
the 65 cc Expe rt class an d Coo pe r
Dawson take home the big trophy in
the 50cc Expert class.
"This is one I think we 're just all
glad to get under our belts ," Whitting
said of the season opener. "Hopefully,
that will be our ' m udde r ' for the
year!"
