I got out of the pits and thought, 'We ll, it 's time to turn it on .' But I went down and had troubles getting the bike started. I just slid out, not a hard wreck or anything. By the t ime I got it started, though, I was so tired and just went into cruise mode." As Pearson pushed his bike off the course, Bonds actually ran into Pearson's bike and went down, too. "I pulled my bike off [the course], but it was around a comer, and Bobby hit me," Pearson said. "I'm like, 'Sorry, dude.' He picked up his bike and acrually got it started while I was still kicking." Pearson later got Bonds back and finished out the race in second. My 66 OWN RACE Kurt Caselli 11 Josh Weisenfels 8th 5th KTM's Kurt Caselli might have had the ride of the day. On the first lap, Case lli went dow n and finished out the lap in 28t h place. But that wouldn't last for long, as he charged his way back up through the pack to finish a rem arkable fifth after passing Ty Davis on the last lap. "I got a good start; I think I was second ." Caselli said. "Nathan got by me, and I was third. There was a left-hander, and I just came in the re and too k the wrong line and swapped out real bad. I landed kind of hard on my leg, and a cou ple of guys hit my bike. I couldn't rea llydo anything - it was the first lap, and I couldn't get to my bike; guys were going by. I stood off to the side and waite d for an open ing big enough and jumped in there. I straighte ned my bars, fixed my levers and got going. After that I just tr ied to ride as good as I could for two hours. The last friggin' laps I was just hanging o n. I picked off a lot of guys in the last half hour." 12 Destry Abbott 12th A groin injury preve nted Team Gree n Kawasaki's Destry Abbott from doing as well as he wou ld have liked. "Everything was going good ; I was happy where I was at • abou t third at one point - until I pulled my groin," Abbott said. '" act uallydid it originallylast week [at the Geo rgia GNCC]; I came into a comer and did the same thing. It was just instant pain. I tried to do what I could. Towards the end , I was just started not fee ling good - my leg. I was just trying to get as many points as I could. I'm really disappo inted ." 26 Joey Lanza I Ith "It was like World War II out the re ," KTM's Joey Lanza said. "It was so hard . It was hot, big, big whoops, and sandy. My hat's off to Nathan , Russ and Naughton . Those guys just rode a good race . They 're tough. That' s what you had to be today. I had a couple of problems; I lost a shock bolt. I had to stop and shop around for a bolt, because it's not really common to lose a shock bolt. So we finally got that going and took off. I think I was back to like 19th and worked my way back up." 38 MARCH 31, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS Josh Weisenfels, from Fort Smith, Arkansas, loo ked right at home in the Arizona sand and whoops . I charged and gave it everything I had. It was hard." 2 Brian Garrahan 9th A broke n front brake cable slowed G-Brothers ' Brian Garrahan. "I got like a top -five start and rode my race. Igot passed by a cou ple of guys, and about the halfway point, my front brake [cable] just snapped. The track was just bruta l. It's like one of those practice tracks you have at home w here you do a 20-minute moto, and you're proud of yourself, and today you do two hours of it." 36 Pat Garrahan 21st "I got a decent start for once, and every one was going fast," G arra- han said. "I did that for a cou ple of laps and got into my own pace, becaus e I knew it wa s going to be a race where you had to finish strong instead of start strong. I was hav- ing fun, but abou t halfway through, my rear brake wen t out. That was no big deal , and my crew said I was about 12th, and two laps fro m the end , I ran out of gas. I guess my floats were sticking." 78 Kellon Walch 17th "Igot arm pump really bad, so I went into survival mode on the second lap," said Walch, who hasn't raced in over two years after serving his mission for his church .
