It took Windham until lap seven to advance his position from fifth to fourth, as he and Ramsey both went around Wey. Then Windham immediately put Ramsey back a spot. "I got luckywhen I was passing Nathan:' Windham said. "I almost landed on him. He messed up in the whoops, and it was really close. I tucked my head and figured I was about to eject off, but Igot by him." Amazingly, by that point on lap eight, Reed was already running seventh after putting on a tear through the pack. At the halfway point, LaRocco had over three seconds on Vuillemin, and he was beginning to feel quite confident as to the eventual resu lt. "The first I0 laps are tough, because it takes about that long for everybody to sort themselves out:' laRocco said. "I was kind of lookingaround at about the halfway mark to see where these two guys [Windham and Reed) were, and I saw that I had a distance on them. At that point, I kind of went from really trying to put my pace on to just riding without mistakes." Itwas also just past the halfway point that Vuillemin began to fade fast. "I just rode behind laRocco for a long time, and he was running really good, but I just got tight," Vuillemin said. "My arms were pump ing up and swff, and I couldn't hold on good . I faded so bad, so I'm kind of embarrassed to show that ." Windham caught Vuillemin first, making the pass on lap 15 in the turn before the 30 MARCH 31, 2004 • CYCLE NEWS 40th Anniversary
