Legends Gear Up for AHRMA New Mexico Classic The second annual I AHRMA (Ame rican Sandia Classic Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) vintage race weekend is slated for May 1-2 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Race bikes of the '50s th rough '80s includ ing BSA, Bultaco , Husqvarna, Triumph , Norton, Matchless , Honda and BMW will be featured along with hand -shifting 19305 and '405 HarleyDavidson and Indian racers. Four cu rrent 2003 National AHRMA road racing champions from New Mexico will be defending their titles in the 2004 series. At the 2003 eve nt - the largest competitive motorcycle event held In New Mexico • jay Springsteen, the three-time AMA Grand National Champion, turned up the juice in the Formula 750 and Sportsman 750 classes . As we ll as having to beat the curre nt national champion, Springsteen and his vintage Harley-Dav idson XR-TT750 will be challe nged by Reg Pridmore , the former three-time AMA Supe rbi ke Champion riding a vintage 750 Honda, and two -time AMA Grand National Ch ampion Gary N ixon on a Rob North-framed Triump h Trident. In motocross, jeff Smith , twotime World 500cc Motocross Champion, will be racing along with jim Pomeroy. the first American ever to wi n a World Motocross Grand Prix . Pomeroy will also be teach ing a motocross class on Friday, Apr il 30. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet two-time AMA Grand National Champion and two-time Daytona 200 winner Dick Mann and AMA Na tiona l and FIM World Motocross champion Brad Lackey. All are AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame indu ctees. The 2004 Sandia Classic vintage motorcycle races will host AHRMA National series rounds for vintage and postvintage motocross and vintage dirt track. Vintage road racing will be back as well as a bike show, swap meet, ven dors and exhibitions. Over 400 racers are ex pected to partic ipate in th is year's even t. Both road racing and motocross eve nts will be held Satu rday, May I, and Sunday, May 2. Dirt tra ck racing w ill be held Sunday, May 2, at t he Ho llywood Hills Speedway, starting at noon. There will also be a Cinco de Mayo ce lebration with fun for the entire family. For off-road riders, there 'll even be a du al sport ride to the dirt track. The w eekend kkks off w ith a "Meet th e Race rs" social Friday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m . at Ch ick's Harley -Davidson/Buell. Fujinami Takes Second Takahisa Fujinam i beat out his Repsol MontesaHRC teammate Dougie Lampkin to finish seco nd in the Wo rld Indoo r Trials Cham pionship after finishing third in the final ro und of the series in Rie sa, Germany, March 20-21. The two Re pso l Montesa HRC riders came to the last meeting of this series se parated by just two points.
