Winte r Hare Scrambles Se ries . They rode an
impressive race, sett ing a faster pace. Alt hough
the Spo rt Cycles/FMF/Smith/ IMS/D unlop -suppo rt ed Doug Blac kwell blasted his Suzuki to
anoth e r win , th e Mid-South ride rs can't help
but learn a few tr icks of the trade, catap ulting
the mselves into the lead mo re frequen tly these
days.
"I definitely had to ear n my win tod ay," said
Blackwell. "These guys dese rve a lot of cred it.
P.A. [Allen] and Dustin [Gibson] and all of th ose
guys have definitefy stepped it up from wha t it
used to be , and th ey' ve made me work for
every one of these races .
Cycle Shed/Miche lin/Sco tt/Motor XlThorsupported John Robbins was the first Mid -South
guy to take the lead . About a mile after the
start, he moved into the lead on a wide -o pe n
straightaway and led for five miles until Gibson
and Blackwell too k a better line aro und him.
The next Mid-South rider to take the lead was
Allen. He charged his way into the lead after
start ing dead last, and by t he end of t he 15
miles raced, he had secured the fro nt spot ,
whi le Blackwell , Blair Bersano and G ibso n
freight-trained behind him.
Alle n and Be rs a no st o pp ed for gas, and
Blackwell moved to the fro nt.

"I tried to charge," Blackwell ex plained , "but
Gibs on and Alle n we re righ t o n my tail t he
w ho le time . I'm not sure w hat happ ened to
A
P , but Dustin and 1 went back and fort h the
rest of the race ."

Moo se/Maxxis-sp o nsored Gib son ma de t he
fastest lap time during his secon d lap.
'Y\t first , I didn't feel comforta ble riding at
that pace ," said Gibson , "but I deci ded to let
P by and key off of his speed."

That strategy worked when Allen fell into a
bit of bad luck. Ten miles later, Allen oversh ot a
turn and landed in a 20-foot sinkhole, unable to
get out until a nice guy pulled him out .
"Dust in was o n it!" said Blac kw ell. "And
actually, he was a lot closer in reality to me
towa rds t he e nd of t he race tha n what th e
results show. He took a spill, and I th ink that
kind of tired him out."
After hitting a tree, Gibson decided to slow
it down a bit to ens ure himself of second place.
"I tr ied not to charge," Gibson recou nted ,
" be ca use I didn 't want to fall a nd bre a k
anything."
John Maschino also had a bout of bad luck.
His sta rted w he n he woke up at t he hot e l.
Someon e had stolen his bike - t raile r, truck and
all. Anot her rando m act of kindness allowed
him to race. On a borrowed KTM, he finished
in fifth p lace . Just be fo re t ha t , th e Low e
Racing/C larke-ba cked Be rsano c ruised into
third place whe n Allen sank in the hole. Allen
reco vered for fourth .
Off the start of the Tennessee Mountain Trail, Doug Blackwell (9) garners
the holeshot en route to the overall win at round 10 of the Mid-South
Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series.
