Engel, Coker and Heas ton roun ded out the top six. eN Ische as Cool as Ice By CRAIG AND ANGELA JOHNSON REDDICK, FL, FEB. 21·22 The inaugu ra l National Ve t Motocross I Championsh ip was a huge success. Veteran riders came from all ove r the eastern part of the United States for a shot at being crowned champion. Vorte x was the title sponsor, giving out contingencies to the top three in all classes . Other prizes were also given out to the to p riders , including handlebars. goggtes and oils. The weather was perfect , w ith sunshine an d temperat ures in t he 70s . Eve ryo ne got their chance at glory. trying to w in two classes . The one rider w ho did was Florida 's Zach Ische, who topped the Over 25 and Over 30 Amateur classes . Ische never got the holeshot, but he was as cool as ice, wa iting fo r the right time to take eac h moto win. The Ove r 25 and Over 35 Amateurs raced a co mbined moto, with Geo rge Masd ea leading early. Pennsylvania rider Mark Burkho lder was second, fo llowed by Ische , C urt is Joh nson and Craig Allen. Ische passed Bur kho lder o n lap two and reeled in Masd ea . On lap three, lsche passed for the lead in the new rhythm sectio n. The batt le for th ird tightened up , wit h Joh nso n passing Burkholder. Allen, lead ing the Over 35 c o nti nge nt , pushed past both Jo hns o n and Burkho lder to round out the top three. lsche pulled away to the w in, with Masdea in second. In the second moto , Masdea aga in absconded w ith the hole shot . Ische shadowed bac ked C urrier at mete 's end in the second co ntes t. Overall. C urrie r won the (9- 1I) class. followed by Glenn Prestholt and Nash Blayloc k. McC linton , McCarthy a nd Kyle Bir d so ng filled the top three in the 85cc ( 12- 13) class . and Do ug Crockett aced the adjo ined BScc ( 14- 16) class. Currie r faced a s im ila r line u p in the co m pe t it ive Supe rm ini class, but that d idn't dete r him from garnering wins in both mot os. McClinto n followed C urrie r to t he checkered flag in both con tests , w hile t he Yamahamoun te d Crockett (3· 3). McCarthy (4-4) and Birdsong (5-5) filled out the to p five overall. Alba ny, Orego n's R.J. leach tra ile d C urr ier in bo th classes, taking home a second- place finish overall in the 65cc Open class and adding a w in in t he 65 cc (0- 8 ) class , wh ich ra n co mbined w ith the 65cc (9-1 I) class. Just a little over a year ago , O rego n's Erik Meusling was riding in the BScc ran ks. The IS-year-old from Hubbard, Oregon, has pu t in some magnifice nt performances of late , and he has h igh hopes o f sc oring some top performances this summer at the loretta Lynn's Amateur Nationals. If his recent riders are any indication, he shou ld fare qu ite w ell against the t o p Nat ional competition . O n this night , Meusling won both 125cc jun ior and Befo re The Hill class motos, finishing ahead of Yamaha rider Aaron McClinton in both classes. KTM ri der Alyas Wardius wa s the top performer in the SOcc classes, picking up a pair 64 Masdea fo r ha lf the race until he found his o pening and took the win . Masdea kept second, Burkho lde r started third but dropped to sixth, Allen moved to th ird, and jim Badgett got fourth. johnso n rounded ou t the top five. The race o f the day was the com bined Over 30 and Over 40 Pro contest. In the first rac e , Arty Coker grabbed the le ad, ahead of Ricky Hampshire , To m Enge l, Tony Carrei ro and Dan Zullo. Wit hin a couple of l ap~, Z ullo and johnnie Shie lds had mo ved to th ird and fo urt h , ahead o f Engel. The race go t eve n better going into the pit , as the to p four were all side by side. Com ing o ut, Zu llo was lead ing, with Co ker, Hampshire and Shields in tow. Th e long mote took its toll, as Co ker drop ped back to fourt h wh en Ham pshire and Shields passed him . At ha llw ay, Zu llo felt t he he at fro m Hampshire and Shields. The tw o passed Zullo s hortly th ereaf ter. Hampshire had th e 125cc machine screaming ahea d of the bigger fo urst roke machine. Shields closed in but came up o nly a bikelength sh ort whe n t he che cke rs fle w. Ind iana's Je ff Heaston got fou rt h, jus t be hind Zullo and just ahead of Engel. Coker led moto two, w ith Samuel Allen in second . Zu llo, Erik Bur kho lder and Heaston w e re in t he top five . Ham ps hire and Shields were way back in the pac k. Allen and Zullo passed Coker to fight for the lead . Zullo passed Allen in the end to win t he co mbined mo to , of trophies with some fine performances in the 50cc O pen and 50cc (7-8) classes . Sto ne and Metcalf closed the gap o n Bogard an d were cl o sing to wit hin striking distance when the two came together e ntering the rhythm sec tion and went down , giving Bogard some much -needed bre at hing room. Cheste r and Katin inherited second and t hir d , and Wa llace mo ved to fo ur t h. Stone managed to remount in fifth. Bogard 's lea d was fo ur seconds on lap six of th is 12-lap final, but C he ster was clo sing t he ga p. C hester and Ston e quickly bro ke away fro m the pack and took off on lap two. Metcalf, who was flying through the whoops, passed bot h Katin and Diete r for third, re legating them to fourt h and fifth, res pectively. O n lap three, C he ste r and St o ne flew through the tr icky rhy thm section side by side; C heste r was do ing all he could to protect the inside line to maintain the lead . Meanw hile, Metcalf, w ho had been blitzing the whoops all night, got zapped by them and went down , tak ing a couple of lap pers w ith him. D iete r a nd Kat in inhe r it e d thi rd an d fourth , and Scotty Trimble inhe rited fifth.
