Kelly Smith started inside the top
three and finished fourth , just in
front of Mills.
Hansen taking points away fro m them ,
but Hansen is playing by the rules and is
here to stay.
"I let Stewart get out too far, too
early," Hansen said. "I'd really like to try
to beat him some day soon. "
Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Paul
Carpenter
earned
his
first-ever
Supercross podium with a third in the
final. The friendly New Yorker, who has
had his share of luck in the growi ng FourStroke Nationals over the last few years ,
was given an opportu nity by Kawasakithis
year to test and help advance rese arch on
the revolutionary KX250F. He missed the
o pener at Houston , but his redem ption
was his solid ride this weekend.
A fourt h-place start had him up front
early, and after a litt le batt le with Kelly
Smith in the opening laps, Carpente r
looked to be headed forward. In the later
stages of the race , he caught up to sec-
30
ond-placed Hansen but just could not find
a way around the Yamaha rider. He
crossed the line one second behind
Hansen and was happy with his performance although he thought he could have
done better.
"I have had some bad luck, but I've
been working hard, too," Carpenter said
from the podium. "I think I was faster
than Josh [Hansen], but I have to give it to
him - he rode great. The 250F has some
powe r, and I got a good start. I want to
thank Kawasaki, who has been behind me
100 percent. I hope there is more of this,
this year."
Yamaha of Troy's Kelly Smith was
fourth in the final after starting third . After
Carpenter got by him early, Smith made a
little bobble that cost him some time.
I\fter that, his ride was unchallenged and
uneventful.
"I shou ld have been second," Smith
