Sebastien Legrelle was sixth across the stripe on lap one but would draft his way into the lead on lap two. Parriott was fifth across the stripe that time, but he worked his way to the lead in lap three. And so the shuffling began among eight riders who broke away from the main pack as early as lap four. The elite group included Parriott, Bart h, Legrelle, Hinterreiter, Fernandez, Mertens, Richard Cooper of England, and 2003 Daytona Boxer Cup winner Roberto Panichi of Italy. Parriott made another bid for the lead on lap five, running low on the West Banking to take the lead from Legrelle. The race pace at that point was in the midtwo-min ute, five-second range. On the ensuing lap, Fernandez cut the fastes t time of the race, running a 2:0S.189 while running second thro ugh the tri-oval, behind Hinterreiter, who became the first ride r to lead two successive laps across the stripe. Barth wo uld lead laps seven and eight, with Cooper bowing out on lap eight after slowing up in the dogleg on the infield. Parriott then began to assert himself. Sixth out of the infield on lap nine, he was sixth across the stripe as well, but he managed to jockey his way t hrough the field and slip under Fernand ez in the International Horseshoe to take the lead . That lead grew when Barth , Panichi, Fernande z and Mertens fanned out four-wide in an attempt to be the next man in line. That may have been the turning point for Parriott, who was able to cut his fastest lap ofthe race , a 2:0S.614, on lap II, while building a lead of 1.234 seconds. The margin only grew as Pariott led the last four laps. " I looked back wh ile exiting the Horseshoe on the last lap, and I didn't even see them," he said. The next five were tightly bunched, with Barth leading the fray early on lap 13, but he wo uld be swallowed at the line by Fernandez and Hinterreiter, who claimed second and third at the stri pe. Runner-up Fernandez said that he actually made a slight mistake in his dash to the line. "On the last lap, I came into the last lap a litt le too hard, and the back end slid," Fernan dez said, speaking through a translator. "When that happen s, the engine loses power. I wan t to thank everyo ne in Daytona for all the att ent ion paid to us and ou r crews. This is something I can te ll my grandchildren about ." Hinterreiter said that he tried to profit from the experience that he gained last year, when he fini shed fifth at Dayto na. "But it's not a tactical game," he said. "It's a matter of w hether you are in the right position or not. I simply hung o n the gas as best I cou ld, and it turned out to be bett er than last year. It might be a matter of experience, but I think it was how it all worked out from the position I started from ." Parriott said that he believes this win and his experience from the 2003 Boxer Cup Series should put him in a good position to battle for the 2004 Boxer Cup title. "I know now w hat it takes to win the championship after watching Andy Hofmann last year," said Parriott, who finished seventh in the globe-ho pping ser ies in 2003. "He took the oppo rtunity when he saw it, and he won some races, but he was up front always. And that's what it takes to win this series, to be up front, get on the box every week." eN DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL S PEEDWAY DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA RESULTS: MARCH 6 , 2003 (ROUND 1 Of B) BMW MOTORRAD BOXER CUP: I .
