My OWN RACE 96 Aaron Go bert "I because I cou d only imagine what was going o n behind m e:' DiSalvo said. "I looked back r ig ht away. I tried t o look W!~~~:' back as soon as I crossed t he st ripe, just to see. I didn't se e any smoke or anything crazy like that, so I fig ured e verything must be o kay." T he m argin of victory was .33 o f a second, about two bike lengths , Roger Lee second w it h Tommy third. The top six were covered by .254 of a seco nd. It was Yamaha's firs t Daytona Supersport win in 14 years. "It feels great, but it would have been hard not to win out there w ith the bike I was on," DiSalvo said. "On the straightaway it seemed like we had a little bit more than the Kawasakis. Not enough where I thought I could lead it out of the chicane, so I just stuck behind Tommy that last lap . I could tell he was kinda wanting me to go by, but I just couldn't bring myself to lead it ." Roger Lee went with DiSalvo when he passed Tommy. He was inching up on the Yamaha when DiSalvo moved over, fo rcing Roger Lee to back off a little, but not enough to avoid contact. "We pretty much rubbed, I think, the last five or I0 yards to the finish line :' Roger Lee said. When he left the chicane, Tommy Hayden knew DiSalv9 was coming and tried to latch onto him. "I was hoping there'd be a little more time for me to drop. in behind jaso n," Tommy said. "But Reg was coming through fast. Reg had some serious speed coming past me, and he was sucking on jason hard. They kind of got together, and Reg had to shut off. When we first came to the flat, I thought for sure Rege r was going to win. He was rolling. He had good speed and a good draft." Aaron Gobert was the next to cross the line . He felt he had the speed to make a run, but it all went wrong out o f the chicane when he lost the draft. It became a single-file run, and he was left behind. "I got screwed:' he said . Hacking followed Gobert to the line , thinking they might have had a better chance. The defending class champion's weekend was imperiled by a crash on the first day of practice. H is back was so sore, he had to be helped into the saddle of his Superstock bike. He made the best of his one flying lap to qualify second . In Supersport, he wasn't a factor. "I struggled the whole race, just never really was with the pack. and then at the end was n It, the comers. just my weekend." Barnes was a dose :.II sixth on his customer bike from Turn ing Wheels Sports Center in Leesburg, Florida. "We went w ith what we knew, and we put toge ther a package and had Yamaha guys peeking at our stock, off-the-showroom bike," he said . When they came around , he told them, "It's just a Yamaha R6.
