AMA Progressive Ins ur a nce U.S. F lat Track Se r ies My OWN RACE 28 S haun Russell 6t h After struggling just to get the dough together to come to Daytona , Bartels' Harley-Davidson's Shaun Russell put together a decent night at the Daytona Short Track. Russell was fifth after the first lap, and he stayed consiste nt to land sixth at the finish. "I didn't really make any moves forward or backwards ." Russell said. "I raced w ith Joe Kopp for a bit, then Chris Carr passed me , then I caught back up to Joe and passed him back. I felt good . The Bartels' Harley is good . This is a good way to come out of Daytona ." 18 Te r ry Po ove y 9t h This forme r Daytona Short Track winner [1997, 2000] had an 0(( night as he struggled to come to terms with the cushy, mushy Dayto na surface. "What happened to me was that I didn't get a good start , and it wasn't my kind of racetrack," the USC Racing/Ist Legalbacked Poovey said. "I couldn't run my line. I couldn't diamond it. I just had to roll around the top like everyone else. I raced with Jake Johnson , and Igot by him, so that was okay. I wan t to win this thing again, and I think that I can still win races , but they have to be on my type of racetrack. ButI'll be going to 'em all." 41 Brett Landes I Ith This former Daytona Short Track winner [199S] had a rather med iocre run at Daytona - far from up to his usual standards. The Qu aker State/Audiovox-sponsored Landes was 14th 0(( the start, and he only improved to I Ith, chasing Poovey and Jake Johnson most of the way. "I never really got close enough to scrap with those guys," Landes said. ''A lot was going on in front of me. I had my bike set up for the bottom as usual, and the track was really weird . I just couldn't find anything to grab hold of, and I just struggled. I think that all of the guys who were planning to run the bottom struggled. But hey, I was in the main. I just want to give a special thanks to Audiovox, Quaker State and Z Galleries for helping me get here ." 74G Ronnie Jones 13th This fanner Daytona Short Track winner [199 1]did his family proud by making the main event while wearing the number 74G of his brother, David Jones, who was killed in a freak racing accident at the Louisville Half Mile in 1980. The 43-year-o ld Oklahoman ran the bottom of the track in the main event. bouncing through the holes en route to 13th aboard his Terry Poovey-owned, A&A Racing/Arai Rotax. "I always knew that David could make a National. but he just never got the chance, " Jones said. "I know he was helping me tonight . I just had a feeling that I was going to make the main event if I came down here. That [line] is just where I like to run. I've always stuck to it, and it has served me well. Tonight it was just so rough down there that I couldn't get any mome ntum through the comers. It just wasn't the fast line tonight ." " I was coming forward," Carr said . "Yo u know, this the type o f place that gets strung out when it gets as slippery as it is, and it's really hard to make up time. Every time that you come up to a rider, it seems like it takes you two or three laps to figure out how to get by him . I didn't go backwards. I just had a very terrible firs t lap. If I could have done that one better, the result might have been a little bit bitter. Fifth isn't bad. It wasn't what we wan ted, but I still re me m be r coming he re in 1998 when I missed the main event and then lost the championship by two po ints . So fifth is pretty good ." Russell held o n for sixt h , with Kopp slipping to seventh. T he n came two veterans in Springsteen and two-time Daytona Short Track w inner Terry Poovey, w ith fo rm e r Rookie of the Year Ja ke Johnson ro unding out t he top 10 . eN DAYTONA MUNICIPAL STADIUM DAYTONA BEACH , FLORIDA R ESULTS: MARCH (ROUND 1 MARCH 17, 2004 • CY CLE N EWS 4 , 2004 21 ) GRAND NATIONAL (2s "P" 16 ride n ): I.
