OWN RACE
David Fry
2nd Four-Stroke Pro/7th overall
"I pumped up pretty hard and just had a bad first lap [after starting first in class]," Fry said. "[After Krause/Symons passed us],
we just hung with them all day, then on this last lap, I stacked it up really hard trying to chase them down."
Mark Miller
1st 125cc Pro/9th overall
Miller rod e mos t of the race without relief after partner Matt Berault cras hed , breaking his co llarbone and hurting a leg (tho ugh he stuck around for the finish). "The re was ano ther 12S, a Kawi,
and we kind of got ahead of him, " Miller said. "We were just pacing, picking off one guy a lap and
getting up in the top 10, into ninth . Then [Berault] bailed and just limped it in. So then we were
13th or something go ing out, and I just d id what I could!"
Daryl Folks
Ist Over 30 Pro/12th overall
"1 ran out of gas once for about five or six minutes, and we got passed by some Experts and a co uple Pros : ' Folks said. "It was
right here [close to the pits]. What happened was the [gas] cap was lea king. [They didn't have time to install a dry break system
in the tank, having received the bike only two days before the race .] That's the part that put us back , or we'd have been up
there a little further, but we won the class , and that's kind of fun anyway, so it turned out good."

Though it had rained earlie r in the week
(making for superb conditi o ns), there was
no rain in sight on race day. Still, the KTM
4S0 MXC t hat Elmer Symo ns and Paul
Krause ro de spo rted a pair of the "e lephant
ea r" -ty pe hand guards usually seen only for
mud races, which is w hat Symon s had ridden the previous Sunday at th e Ho lliste r
Nation al hare scra mbles. Wh en pr ess ed for
an ex plana tion. Krause answered,
"[Symo ns] w as sca red of the cholla! He
goes, 'Hey, yo u know those big floppy
things?' He 's trying to describe them, and
he's not really sure what t hey were . I go ,
'You mean those big hand guards? ' He goes,
'Yea h! T hos e guys had them in t he mud
[last week at Ho llister]. We need t ho se for
the cactus!' I go , 'Are you sur e?' So last
night I put them o n for him, and he was all
excited. And I'm no t so sure he was excited
about the cactus or because he just thou ght
they were nea t and wa nted to try the m
o ut . But you know what? I've got no cactu s
in my hands!"
