BUBBAa During the runoff race necessitated by a fourrider points tie, Mann wos launched into the wall and had to be transported to the hospital , Taylor too k charge ea rly in this pressure cooker of a race , with Grant and Coolie in hot pursuit. The battle was for the th ird and final transfer spot . Kemp made a game charge, but Coolie fought him off to the checkers. The main event was stage d and ready to go. The big crowd was on its feet, and the intensity could be felt all the way up to the rafters. With the big money on the line and the TV cameras rolling, announ cer Chris Lee made it clear that Venegas cou ld narrowly steal the 2004 Wo rld Championship, along with the Vegas Open cash, if he could win this one. The gate was released, and off the y flew. "The Edge" was on a mission, as thou sands of fans - including his whole family - cheered him on . Pieper blasted his way into secon d, but McConnell was all over him. On lap two, McConnell muscled his way past . At the three-lap halfway mark, Venegas was smoo th, not lett ing McConnell get a good shot at him. As the last-lap flag fl ew, McConnell was closing in! Meanwhile, Taylor got by Pieper for third. Venegas could feel McConnell breathing down his neck, but he stayed focused and too k the checkered flag and the $5000! Venegas had won the Open and, in the process, his sixth overall World Championship by a scant three points! McConnell and Taylor joined Venegas on the podium for some big checks, some awesome trophies and a champagne drenching! This incred ibly exciting night of racing wrapped up a very successful 28th season for ICE/WSRA Speedway. Plans are already under way for number 29 and ICE Open II.
