After completelydominating round one. Lance Smail's I I th-p1ace finish came as a bigsurprise. "Well, it seemed like I was out of energyall day," Smail said. " I got a decent start and worked my way into third before the firstlap but was suffering from severe ann pump and a dry mouth. Istayed in third for another loop before I had to slow down and get regrouped. Just then, Iwent down inthe mud and covered my gloves, making my grip problem even worse. I let a bunch of the guys by and tried to relax and get back into the groove , but I was just too beat clown with no fight in me. The track was great, and my Kawi was awesome, I was just pathetic." For the first time, the WORCS series used t ransponde rs for scoring. According to Off-Road Adventure's Dave Hamel, the promoter of the WORCS series, the new scoring system , provided by Trackside Software. was a hit. "We had a prob lem with o ne of the classes , but overall, the transponders are awesome." Using transponders has many advantages, but the two main ones are : no longe r having to stop to be scanned during the race, and much quicker posting of race results. WaRCS members, howeve r, must purchase the ir own personal transponders that they keep throughout the year and for following years if the y want . The cost is $40, but riders will be refunded half that cost at the end of the season with the return of the transponde r. "Ride rs who use the transponder for two or less races can get a $30 refund," Hamel says. Non·WORCS members will be requ ired to use transponders, as well. and will be expected to leave a security depos it of $40 until the transponder is returned. Honda has developed an off-roa d conting e ncy progra m for both the WaRCS and GNCC series this year. A win in the AA Pro class at a WO RCS race, for example. will pay a Honda rider $750. Honda cash is also availablein most of the A, Band C classes, as well. Fo r more information, visit H onda's websi te at www.ho ndared riders.com . On Saturday, Russ Pe a rson sacrificed his start pick for Sunday's Pro race when he stopped to help a fallen rider. Pro riders are required to race in certain classes on Saturday to determine their start picks for Sun day 's premier race, but Pearson didn't care about that when he came across a rider who had crashed hard and rang his be ll. Pearson also made a special t rip back to the pits to inform the injured ride r 's fat he r. De spite a 36th pick, Pear son still got a good start Sunday. Kawasaki rider Ricky Diet rich, (pictured) of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was the top -finishing Semi-Pro rider. Dietrich passed Branden Ritzman on the fourth lap and held the lead the rest of the way. Dietrich finished 13th overall. 40 MAR 10, 2004 • CYC LE NEWS CH 40th A nniversa r y
