At the other end of the age spectrum, young jake Kaiser rode his 200cc Kawasaki to the win in the 12Scc Amateur final, over Max Geib and Matt Polheber. It was youth and exuberance ove r age and cunning in the Vintage class, as Bryce jacobs bea t Mike Dugan on match ing 500cc Hondas . Dan Luchon kept the m honest, as he was ready to strike on his short- rod Triumph if either one missed a beat . In the Over 40 class, Honda -mounted Roy Nafzger put up a good battle w it h Kawasakimounted Pickett for the first few laps, but once Pickett got clear, it was all over. Curt Stapert stayed close for third. Young Brock Schwarzenbache r had his hands full in the 250cc Amateur class. He had to get by Serge Figililz, Dan Biddle and Brandon Hafaes to finally take the lead and the wi n. Hafaes too k second , with Biddle third. KTM·mounted Logan Myer rip ped off the line and left second place to Nafzger in the 250cc Pro class. jeff Fredette bro ught his new Kawasak i 250cc fo ur-st r o ke in t hird after getting by Mark Schmidt and Chris Foskett. Schwarzenbacher too k the holeshot in the O pe n Amateur final. but john Olmst ad drove aroun d the outsid e and parked the youngste r. john Cooper ran a solid th ird. The y ran four wide into the first comer in the O pe n Pro final, but when the snow dust settled, Pickett had ree led off some 13-second laps to take the win. He nry Wiles came home seco nd, with Na fzger t hi rd . Lance Wollin battled with jo hn Stra ngfeld fo r fourth and got it. The Dash For Cash is a "pot luck " race. First, a ride r must pre-enter and pay up front. Next , he has to finish at least third in his class final to make the race . T he n, t he Amateur racers get to line up on the normal starting line, while the Pro riders line up in the middle of turns three and four. At t he light, Schwarzenbacher took the early lead fro m the front row. Pickett was on the charge : By the th ird lap, he had passed every Amateur except Schwarzenbacher and john Co oper, who was runn ing second. Three laps later, Pickett was w ithin striking distance of the leade r. Mack Daddy Racing's Wiles moved to third. With one lap to go, Picke tt took the lead and wo n the $210 winner-take-all purse . Checkered Flag Productions Arenacross Races Chisholm Trail Are na Berry Blazes to Chisholm Trail Arenacross Wins By JENNIFER WILSON ENID, OK, JAN. 17 There may have been ice on the streets and I roads of Enid. O klahoma , but tha t wasn't enough to ke e p the racers away from the Chisholm Trail Colise um and the Ch ec kered Flag Prod uct ions Are nacross Races. The Coliseum is huge. and t he track builders used the entire floor to construct a supercross trac k. The minibike classes were a big part of the night of races, and they we re certainty a cro wd favorite . Colton Lawrence too k the holeshot in the 55cc Op en contest but quickly los t his momentum an d fell out of con tention . An aggressive Hunte r Davidson attacked the track on h is Hon d a, passing Keet o n Neufeld . Davidso n finished first. The Neufeld brot hers both made the podi um, with Keeton finishing seco nd and Kale Neu feld hanging on for third. just in Be rry showed w hat it took to be a true competitor. Berry was first off the starting line in the 85cc Op en class and held that lead all the way to an easy first-place finish. Brandon Do ol e y from Garde n City, Kansas , placed second , and Logan johnson finished in th ird place. Be rry then took second place in the 125cc Novice class, beh ind Tyler Thomas o f Woodward, O klahoma. Berry's final race of the night, the 250cc Novice contest. saw him once again first off the starting line. Berry led the way to soar acr o ss th e finish line and place first , w hile Toby Madday fro m Perryton, Texas , finished second, and David Gall from Edmond , Ok lahoma, followed in th ird. In the 125cc Beginner class, Logan johnson started in the lead, but he was forced to eat dust on the third lap as Grant Carlisle took the lead and went straight on through to finish first. 66 Travis Bernhardt stu bborn ly fought his way up fro m a fourth-place start to ta ke home th e seco nd-place trop hy. Tyler Ne ufeld finished in third place. Blake Ca rlisle lost t he lead in the 250cc Inte rmed iate class whe n Bre tt Cue flew past him on lap five. Cu e checke d out and le t the rest of the oth er riders in his class to battle it out . Brendan Grgurick from Novinger, Missouri, overcame a fifth-place start and battled his way forward. Grgurick ran out of laps, and his march to the front stopped with him finishing second. Brad Rodgers finished thi rd , De rrick Loomis followed Rodgers across the finish line in fourth , and that left Carlisle the fifth-place spot., . Chris Drummond held the lead in the 250« Pro class by the sea t of his pants, as Shawn Stillwell and De nnis Hotson were hot o n his heels . O n the final lap, St illw ell, in a bur st of speed. passed Drum mo nd a nd c rosse d the finish line in first place. Hotson took advantage of Stillwell's mo mentum and followed him to p lace second . A disappoi nted Dru m mo nd finished third . Xtremeworld Arenacross Series Round 5: Claremore Expo Center Smith Steps It Upl By CHUCK BAll CLAREMORE, OK, JAN. 17-18 A s the Xtremeworld Arenacross Se r ies Mreturned to Claremore's Expo Ce nte r for rou nd five, riders came in from t he cold , wet weather and were treated to indoor racing at its finest. Mark Blackwe ll steered his YZ250 F out to the early lead in the night's first 125cc Pr o mota. Robbie Smith and Shawn Coo k followed closely in second and third, respectively. Smith was looking to make a pass, and he did so by the end of lap one. Riding mistake -free and fast, Smith held on for the rest of the moto for the win. Behind him, Blackwell held on to second. Chris Shellenberger came home in third . Mota two got off to a good start as jacob Ba sha m absconded with the holeshot; Smith, Blac kw e ll and Be n Schrik fo llo w e d . Smith quickly put the pressure on Boshom as the two bum ped and rub bed all ove r the track. O n lap tw o, Smith finally made a pass, and he quickly put some distance betwee n himself and the rest of the pack. Blackwell moved up to challenge Basham for the runner- up spot, and they pulled away fro m Schrik , who wa s holding o ff Shellenbe rger. Basham and Blac kw e ll got tangled up in a corner, and both wen t down , but Blackwell remounted quickly and went on to finis h second , ahead of Shellenberger, Schrik and Basham . Smith lapped up to second. A holeshot by Smith in the first 250cc Pro moto was about as e xci ting as it got . Shellenbe rger and Michae l Duran battled for second for a few laps until Duran bobb led and let Shellenberger get aw ay. Sm ith lapped runner·up Shellenberger en route to the win. Duran finished th ird. Mota two was nearly a carbon copy of the first, as Smith put his YZ450F o ut front and pulled away. Again, Shellenbe rge r and Du ran battled fo r the re main ing two spots . Shellenberger came away w ith second in the moto as well as second ove rall , w it h Duran th ird. The final Pro race of the night was the $3000, 25-lap Clash For Cash. Smith stuck the nose of his YZ250 F o ut front, just ahead o f Blackwe ll, for the early lead . Riding smoothly yet aggressively. Smith was never challenged. Instead, he let the battling for positions go on behind him, as Blackwell and Boshom went at it for severa l laps until Blackwe ll seem ingly flipped a switch and pulled away. The top three finished in that orde r, and Schrik finished ahead of Shellenberger to take fourth . "Man, that was one of the best nights of racing I've ever had! " Smit h e xclaimed afterward. "The trac k was pretty good. It got a little rough toward the end, but it was the same for everybody. The whoops were t he toughest , but I felt really good coming into tonight, and I think I rode all right. I want to thank Troy Lee Des igns, Reynard Modifications , Re nt hal, my dad, my girl friend , Ba ke r Boys Yamaha, and everyone else!"
