CMC Gol den Sta te MX Na tionals Round 2: Sand Hill Ranch Crummen Crumbles Sand Hill MX By MIKE VANCIL BRENTWOOD, CA, JAN. 18 0" this day, Eric C ru mmen d isplayed a do minance in his two class victories that might have surprised everyone but him· se lf. His three victories o ut of four mot os en tered in the large 125cc and 250cc Profess io nal classes w ere demonst ratio ns of supreme co nfide nce . The 28th an nual Mo tocross C lass ic by C MC was made possible by sponsors Western Powe r Sports and Fly Racing. This was also the sec ond rou nd of the no rt hern po rt ion of the 2004 Go lden State Nat io nals, wh ich res ulte d in o ne of t he largest tu rno uts in mod em CMC mot ocr oss history. In the first mote of the day (and the first competitive ride for C rumm en on his 250cc Kawasaki), the 250cc Pro ho leshot went to Nick Davis, o n a very fast Suzuki. It appe ared both of these racers have spe nt co nsidera ble time on t racks to ge th er and trusted each other in the high-speed ballet , which is one way to describe excellent mo tocross actio n. Davis and C rum men are fro m O akley an d have ra ce d agai nst each o t her fo r seve ral seasons. Though he did challenge several times, Cru m men's pass didn't mate rialize until late in the moto. Davis slipped back one mo re position when he wa s passed by Honda rider De nnis Kritzer. Crummen carried the lead to the finish, with Kritzer right on his rear wheel. Prior to lining up for the second 250cc Pro moto, C rummen had his confidence fo rt ified by a moto win in another class , which may have inspired him, for he performed nawfessty off the line to lead the pack around the first right-hander and onto the short stra ight prior to the first of cwo climbs up Sand Hill per lap. Hot on his rear wheel was Davis. These two riders opened up a sizable gap between themselves and thi rd place.
