t e r the controversy surrounding his win at the
Phoenix Supercross, where he
and Yamaha's David Vuillemin
ade spectacular contact on
the first lap and Vuillemin fell , Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's Kevin Windham came back
A
just three races later to win his second race
of the season in only his fifth supercross
race since returning from ret irement. Once
again. though. Windham went on to win a
main event after making contact with a
Team Yamaha rider. However, this time that
rider was Chad Reed, and Reed was the
one dishing it out .
"Me and Kevin were battling - I would
lead, and he would lead," Reed said. "It
seemed like every time someone would
lead, we 'd make a mistake . We were getting on with the laps, and I could see Mike
coming, so I just thought that I'd try to
make something happen, and I just put the
front wheel on Kevin. and he turned a little
earlier than I expected and just hit his foot,
and I just grabbed a handful of front brake
- I didn't want to lose no 10 po ints or nothing, so (laughs) I just went down."
Starting on the left side of the split start,
Reed grabbed his second holeshot in as
many weeks. Just like last week in San
Diego, though, Windham was hot on his
heels right off the bat. and the two immediately put distance between themselves
and then -th ird-place Damon Huffman and
fourth-place Mike LaRocco . Windham
seemed content to follow Reed, as common speculation was that Windham made
his move on Reed too early in San Diego.
which allowed Reed to study up on
Windham 's lines enough to make the late
move back by.
"Yeah, you know, last weekend I passed
him on lap three, and I felt like he was able
to make up time on me by paying attention
(Above) Chad Reed (22) got the
holeshot again in Anaheim. And just
like in San Diego, Kevin Windham
(14) was hot on his tail.
(Left) This time, Windham (14) made
a pass that stuck. After Reed (22)
ran into him and fell, Windham
rode on to his second win of the
season.
