Fall/Winter Series Daniel's Ridge Morocross Roberts Rocks the Ridge By MARK NEUENS TAYLORSVIUE, NC, DEC. 28 ho ugh December was nearing its en d , a mild, almost earty-summe r day greeted the riders at Dan iel 's Ridge Motocross in Taylorsville. North Carolina. Temperatures in the low 70s we re welcome in the few days afte r Christmas . Clyde Roberts , riding in great form , swep t three classes - the 125cc B, 250cc B and Unlimited Amate ur classes. His only close competition was jason Hazelwood . In the Unlimited Amateur contest , Hazel woo d led Robe rts at t he start, but Roberts made a quick pass and went on for the wi n. Behind them , jeremy Reid and Nathaniel Rovira - bot h on new Honda CRF250Rs - we re batt ling hard. The ir race from the start to the finish was great. Rovira got out fron t, and Reid stay ed right on his back tire - until he made the pass and took the checkered nag first. Reid too k the second mota fro m the fro nt, but Rovira was right on Reid's back tire . Nicky Baker, running in the Senior Pro class, was working his way up from behind, trying to get under Rovira. Bake r succeeded and then held off ROVira. which let Reid take the checkered nag before Rovira. Reid too k th ird o ve r all, beh ind Roberts and Hazelwood . with Rovira taking fourth ove rall. Rovira and Reid re peated the ir batt le in the 125cc C class. Rovira took the checke red nag. over Reid, in the first rnoto . but Reid came back in the second outing to take third overall in the 125cc C class, w hile Rovira placed fourth . jonathan Bryant too k the overall win. and Andy Snellings too k second. Holden Fox had no problem sweeping the 65cc Open class, but in t he 65 cc ( 10- 1 I) contest, Fox ended up fifth , w hile jord a n Daniels and Tanner Wilson had a great race out fro nt . Wilson too k the top spot in t he first mote. but Daniels wo uld n't le t that happen again in mota two, taking the top spot and t he o verall win . Santa's Sprocket MX Series Round 5: Mesquire Mo ra-X Park Carder Cards a Win, Nanney Spanks 'em By DICK GOODWIN MESQUITE, NV, DEC. 28 M ichael Carder kept improving his racing and his results - until, at the end of the final round of the five-race Santa's Sprocket MX Series at Mesquite Moto-X Park, he owned the Open ju nior trop hy. Ca rder st arted off behi nd justin Elswood and Nick De Carlo . He battled with De Carlo and Tracon Kirk un til he finally too k o ve r second place. Elswood was on fire out in front, and he we nt on to w in race one, with Card er edging out Kirk for second . De Carlo and Kirk led Carder as the secon d half kicked off. Carder dug deep and passed Kirk and the n De Carlo to take over the lead . Kirk the n mounted a countercharge to snake his w ay int o second , and he stayed clo se . Carder kept the he at o n and closed out the mota with a win that would earn him the Open junior c rown. Kirk stayed w ith him to grab seco nd overall , ahead o f Brock Bryant and Char les Wright. The Over 30 junior class was also mixing it up at Mesquite. Kevin Nanne y was the big eater in this group, flattening the class in each moto. Na nne y jumped out in front of Robert Mozingo w hen the board dropped, but Sean Mcintyre made a n ea rly pass to take ove r second. They wen t at it no se to ta il until Clyde Roberts (38) eventually got around Ja so n Ha ze lw ood (614) for the Unlimited Amateur win at Daniels Ridge Motocross. 38 FEBRUARY 4,2004 • CYCLE NEWS Mozingo took a soil sample after the finish-line ta ble to p. Th e n Rob De 5pain move d up to challenge Mcintyre. Nanney rode uncontested to the win, while De Spain took advantage of a late-race crash by Mcintyre to finish second . Nanney led the charge on ce again in the second half, as De Spa in a nd Moz ingo gave chase. Nanney loo ked uncatchable, and t he fight was over second spo t. Mozingo made a pass on the east side on lap two to secure the runner·up spot. Nanney was on a tear, ope ning up a huge lead. Mcintyre came on late , passing De Spa in and challenging MOZingo for t he runner-up position. Nanney romped to anothe r easy w in and the Over 30 junior title.
